Operating systems crash on loading!

I've been trying to reload Mandriva 2007 & Ubuntu on each of the 2 hard drives of my desktop PC. However, the pc generally crashes (mostly screen freezes) with the installations failing each time. I've never had the two said operating systems do this before now. Could this be down to memory failure and or hard drive failure?

You can test your RAM with a LiveCD... i can't remember the name of the tool but i think its something along the lines of memtest.
 
Yes, guys - it was a defective memory stick flagged up by Memtest! The PC is now running on just 1 X 256MBs. Well, I have decided to buy a 1GB stick and slap that in. Any excuse for an upgrade!! :P
