P4 or XP Chip?

Hey,

I want to get a new Motherboard and CPU but don't know whether to get a P4 2.4 or XP 2100+. There is a bit of price difference but is there really much performance difference when using a Geforce 3 Ti 200 and DDR 2700 RAM? If anyone could offer advice I would appreciate it.

That P4 may be slightly faster, but for the price/performance, the XP2100+ is a much better deal. With a GF3 Ti200, the performance in gaming should be minimal, if any.
 
That's pretty good, just don't forget shipping charges that may apply. (which shouldn't be that much).

Depending on how you like it, it could be cheaper to purchase the CPU separately and then get a different heatsink and fan combo.
I've got an XP2000+ @ 1.8GHz (2200+ speeds) with a Thermal Right SK-7 heatsink and an 80mm fan atop it that runs around 2500RPM and the temp is in the lower 40's. Also the voltage is at 1.85 Volts or so. The best part is, it's pretty quite. Since I've had a P4 with the retail heatsink and fan, I've gotten a little jealous of what the P4's have in the cooling department. I don't have a 7000RPM fan on any machine, but I'm beginning to look at getting something a little better for my Athlon 1.4 instead of the current cooler on it.

I used to not be as picky on what I used for cooling, but now I am. I don't know how you are with sound, but the retail heatsink and fan that comes with the Athlon's isn't exactly silent, nor is it lawnmower either. It's a basic cooler and isn't anything fancy, but it does the job well enough.

Not to confuse you, but I thought I'd throw that out before ya buy.
 
Well, the price at buymstar just shot up to $130, so I'd forget about that. I was just going to buy the retail Athlon and use the fan and heatsink that came with. Do you think it'd be advantageous enough to spend $30 or so for a good heatsink and fan?
 
Thanks for all the advice and comments. I actually live in Australia so I'm looking at about $180 AUS for a 2100+ retail or $380 AUS for a P4 2.4Ghz (533) retail. I am able to buy OEM but the cost isn't much less over here.

If your planning on overclocking or want a cooler system I'd go with a 3rd party HS/Fan. Stock cooler is fine for the rated clock speed but don't think I'd attempt to use it for overclocking or in an already hot case.

Of course if you really want a quiet cool system I'd go with water cooling or get a refrigerated case. I have WCing in my system now and it's so much better than the old Delta fan I had in it :).
 
I don't plan on overclocking, but...loud? My current system has one case fan in front and the heatsink and fan (not sure what brand), and it's incredibly quiet.
 
Yeah the few fans you have shouldn't be a big deal, but before I went with the water cooled system, I had 2 HD coolers, Delta fan on the Athlon, 5 case fans, Leadtek GF 4 Ti 4600, and what wierdly enough was and still is the loudest part of my system my Toshiba DVD-Rom drive.

When you get that many fans in a system begins to sound like an airport :).
 
No just the room it's in was designed for an office so it's quite small and ends up becoming quite hot. 15-20 minutes in the room with everything running you'd think you were in a sauna :).
