Possible PSU problem

Hello,

this is my new rig:

Core I7 920 (not oced)
P6T SE Asus mobo
Ati 4870
DDR3 3x2GB RAM
Hiper 580w PSU
750gb HDD
Xfi extreme soundcard

I set it up today, I experienced a random shutdown on a few occasions and I keep getting strange electrical crackling noises coming from it. I assume this is a PSU problem, is it not having enough juice for the setup? should i get a more powerful one or is there something else here?

The psu has enough juice, it is just you bought a bad psu. That is a bad brand. When you go for a psu you should never cheap out, or get from a brand that is not reliable. corsair for example i would consider makes the best psu's.

For that build a 520hx,550vx, ect around that area would be perfect. PC power & cooling make some good psu's as well.

Also, oc that 920!
 
Keep an eye on your temps that could be another possible reason why it's shutting off, other than that it can't be anythin but power supply unit.

thanks for the advice but i consider Hiper a very good brand i have used them for many years, but i actually figured out what the problem is, basically my Hiper 580 which i had for 3 years suddenly decided to blow one of it's rails which is why it was not producing enough power for the rig which ended up in random shutdowns and the CPU fan not working. I have ordered a 850 OCZ Xtreme PSU which should do the trick.

BTW i only had this i7 920 for two days and i was hoping on testing it's performance before OC it, but i will do soon :)

My CPU temp was 43c IDLE and 55 on full load so it was fine :) i have a Akasa Nero hooked up to it and some arctic cooler paste :)
 
In my experience hiper is okish, but i have seen a few blow. But we all have our favorite brands. But 850w? that is just a little bit overkill. But if your going for future proof...

Anyway, glad you got the problem solved.

Ok i don't know why you typed it twice?? anyways i went for the 850 so i can keep it for at least 3 years so in he future it will still have enough juice and connectors.
 
^sorry, that was an internet hick up (i was using dial up at the time. the page did not load after i clicked post, so i refreshed it and it posted twice.
