PSU and Mobo

Hi, i was wondering, if i put a 350 watt power supply in my Compaq Presario 5000t with its default 235 watt PSU would it damage my motherboard? I asked those idiots at Compaq and they keep throwing all this shit at me and im starting to doubt thier word.
 
Maybe the psu won't physically fit into the case, that's the only problem I would see.

Compaq computers are built very poorly imo. They're probably the most unstandardized computers, and it's on purpose.

If your board is ATX, and the psu is ATX, then there won't be any problems.
 
I know Dell has done, and probably still is doing the following: having specialized motherboards where the ATX power connector on the motherboard has a different pinout from the regular ATX power connector pinout. Using a non-Dell PSU will toast the motherboard. I have NOT heard of Compaq doing this, but that's about the only other thing besides space issues that I can see.
 
Ok, thank you for your help, but how to i find out if my mobo is ATX? and if it isn't does that mean i cant get a new psu? The psu seems to be alot smaller than normal ones, i tried contacting Compaq but they dont know anything at all.
