Ok my BIOS sees all 500 GB of my HDD but windows XP doesnt, any suggestions? I have LBA mode enabled. Im running it SATA.:confused:
 
How much of the hard drive does windows see? If windows see's roughly 465GB then everything is fine... Its a real 'shaft' but hard drive manufacturers measure the storage in 1000's of bytes instead of 1024's of bytes and have done so as long as i remember.

An easy way to tell the *real* capacity of a hard drive is to divide it by 1.024 three times, for example:

500 / 1.024 / 1.024 / 1.024 = 465.66

and for quick reference, here is the real capacity of other sizes of hard drive

10 GB = 9.31 GB
20 GB = 18.63 GB
30 GB = 27.94 GB
36 GB = 33.53 GB
40 GB = 37.25 GB
60 GB = 55.88 GB
74 GB = 68.91 GB
80 GB = 74.51 GB
100 GB = 93.13 GB
120 GB = 111.76 GB
160 GB = 149.01 GB
180 GB = 167.64 GB
200 GB = 186.26 GB
250 GB = 232.83 GB
300 GB = 279.40 GB
320 GB = 298.02 GB
400 GB = 390.62 GB
500 GB = 465.66 GB
750 GB = 698.49 GB
1000 GB / 1 TB = 931.32 GB
 
Yah I knew about the shafting, and yah it sucks, but its still a lot of space. No my computer only Sees 137 GB. Which is really the norm I guess for a problem like this. I think I know how to fix it though. I am going to clone my drive on like a 120GB and use it as the primary. Then just re-format and re-partition the 500 GB and use it as extra space. What do you think?

it won't work, sure you will be able to clone a 120GB partition to the 137GB, but, to fix it you 'll need to either download the SATA drivers for XP (they are not included with XP) & press F6 when prompted & direct XP to the drivers (A:) or slipstream the SATA driver to a new XP CD (legel)

BTW: while you're slipstreaming you may throw any service packs at it too

I have autostreamer, and I slipstreamed my xp with SP3 but I dont know exactly how to slipstream with the sata files and the Service packs.

well as you have already slipstreamed you XP CD with SP3 you could just slipstream it again (as you know how easy it is) to do this follow this guide & just ignore if it keep saying SP2 because you have SP3

personally i'm using Linux & i haven't slipstreamed a win CD for years & i think i used nLite

pardon, i don't know what you mean, do you mean the "source" an in the source URL or modify the source code :confused:[ot]it could be me looking too far into it[/ot]
