I recently built two identical systems - one for my brother and one for myself.
With these systems I purchased 6600GT graphics cards.
I'm not sure about everybody else here, but I have little knowledge about SLI and how "good" it really is.
I decided to pinch my brother's graphics card while he was out to see how much SLI helps your performance. I was pleased to see that I could easily run BF2 with all graphics settings on HIGH, resolution of 1280x1024 @ 75Hz, 4xAA and 16xAF.
Before inserting a second 6600GT I managed all settings on HIGH at 1024x768 and 4xAA and AF-off.
I then insterted a second gigabyte of DDR2 RAM @ 667MHz - this removed all menu lag inside BF2 as well as any lag when entering a server - which i experienced before.
I'm not sure how affective SLI is in all games, it has worked very well for me in BF2 - I've now ordered a second 6600GT for myself.
