Virus/Adware help

My friend has got virus(es) and/or adware, he says when he's on the net and tries to go to a page he can't go to it as it redirects him to other page(s) (he didnt say which one(s))
He says he's got:
Adware.leseats and smartfinder which are causing the problems, I'm going round there on friday to try and sort things out and wondered if anyone has any ideas on this.

cool yeah i've got some software which i will take with me (its free so not illegal) I've got:
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Spybot S&D
AVG
will get that hijack this as well, thaks pelvis_3
 
As with most software like those they always recommend a scan in safe mode, i never follow the rules, thats why i always come out of it happy!
Everytime i follow the rules i stuff something up, it's up to you how you scan :)
 
also get him to use Mozilla Firefox coz as u all know its way much better in stopping these stuff...theres a new version 1.0.7
 
yeah I know, I have Firefox and all my friends use it as well, (I also have Thunderbird and Sunbird might see if he wants Thunderbird for his e-mail)
Well thanks for the tips I shall try and fix it, I've got a folder with utilities in it so i shall take that with me to try and rid him of the monsters.
 
Spybot Search & Destroy (set to advanced mode and set it to download/install latest updates then scan everytime u boot ur computer up, set it to low priority so it doesnt stall ur booting) (Removal Tool)

Spyware Blaster 3.4 - have to update manually, but this will block known websites that provide spyware/malware from installing / downloading, and will block your browser from visiting or contacting these sites (preventitive tool)

Adaware SE-Personal - Another Remove Tool - no automated process or update in free version, but still very good.

Always run more than 1 removal tool for spyware/malware, this way u can be sure that u remove everything, as not one program will recognise every single piece of spyware about.

Use Mozilla Firefox as your browser & run a firewall - i recommend Sygate Personal Firewall.
 
awesome, thanks a lot, yeah I use Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy, plus my dad bought me mcafee internet security suite and i have sygate presonal firewall.
 
As usual - my small input:

I use MS Antispyware for blocking unwanted activities.
Very good, and .... free,
I know someone here said it removed IE but I have to say that it never gave me any problems. It detected things that others did not.

I use Sygate free edition and McAfee virus scan.

But Personaly I think that AVG beats them all hands down! Easy on resources, versatile and for a free program it gives unbeatable value!

I tried to use PeerGuardian, not for P2P but for general security. Had to disable it though because it is very aggressive and tweaking it is not very easy....

In any case I always scan in safe mode.

Hey btw I personally agree with IE being worse off with spyware (because lately i keep getting spyware right away when I open IE even if all I do is go from msn.com to hotmail), but I saw this article ... which basically casts doubt on how much more secure firefox is than IE ... what do u guys think of that? Just wanted to share.

Personally, i don't think much about it at all.
The fact is in my eyes, IE has always and always will suck. Firefox is superior that does, and will hopefully always RULE!
