Just finished and had to share....

This is by far one of the best films I have ever seen. It is obviously a bit closer to my heart given my origin but it is cinematic brilliance by any standard.

As I am not a film critic by profession, I am not going to attempt to analyse the film but will just say that it is brutal, shocking but surprisingly humane.

It is the only Israeli film (well any film) I know which deals with the terrible Sabra and Shatila massacre which took place in 1982 in the midst of the Lebanon war.

If you are of strong constitution, love films and interested in the subject, I can not recommend it enough. It is not easy to watch and can be a bit disturbing. Still it is worth every minute, I feel.....

  • It's about a touchy subject
  • The art direction is very interesting
  • Did very well in independent film circuits
  • Takes a very pragmatic view on a very polarized topic
  • Not overdubbed in English :)
  • Everything else seems to have Christian Bale or Vin Diesel in it lately.

Did it annoy you to have the subs running all the time?
Brilliant for me to be able to switch them off.....

You may find it strange but I was so happy about the language in the film. Israeli Hebrew has declined to such a low level since I left and it seems that the film uses simple yet correct and dignified language which I was really happy to hear. I found the actors voices/speach, in some places, hipnotic.

My brother was one of the unfotunates to fight in that war (and one of many fortunate ones who made it back alive...), thankfully in another region and away from that atrocity. Still he will not watch this film in fear of what it will wake in him..... It made me think of him and what it must have been like for him then.... the things he did and saw...

It has been a number of days now since I watched the film and I am still thinking of it...

No, I don't mind subs. I'm a very fast reader, and it's not like there was too much extremely fast action in that movie in any case.

Exactly! I have never heard so much bad English used as an integral part of another language... My language is not perfect but I do make an effort, both with English and Hebrew.

In any case, I am going to try and track down DVD's of other films by Ari Folman. Apparently he made a few others which are very good...
