Because Google has so many servers and so much bandwidth, it makes an ideal homepage. Not to mention it's arguably the best search engine there is. I also make Google the default homepage on people's systems when I first set them up, and usually they leave them that way for years.

It's fast to load, it's a very simple design, and it's where you start if you're looking for something. So you're right: it's ideal.
