Hi all, I've had FF 3 since release and have had no problems with it whatsoever. In my security settings I make sure I have private data auto-cleared and I make sure that all the 'history' boxes under privacy are unchecked. However, I recently installed the 3.0.8 update and whenever I go onto google search, auto-complete turns on and suggestions come up. I went back to the privacy section and checked to see if any of the boxes were checked, and none of them are... I DON'T know why auto-complete is activated and I don't know how to get rid of it - I've been through all the normal settings. Can anyone help me and tell me what to do!!?? Thanks for any and all help!
You have "unchecked" the boxes? Shouldn't they be "checked" instead, if you want the history to clear when you close Firefox?
Unfortunatly no. The fields are to 'remember' what you enter - and I have unchecked these. The only other one is to clear private data upon closing FF, which i DO have checked... thus it will delete my stuff. I have no idea what is causing auto-comlete to stay on and I don't want it. I would really appreciate any other insight or help into this. Thanks.
Actually it's searching through similar popular Google searches, not a history of things you've typed necessarily. Doesn't have much implication towards privacy one way or the other.
only if a plugin like Customize Google is installed in FF @Resonance456: what plugins are installed in FF ?
Nope, not true. It does this by default as part of normal 3.x behavior. For instance: ...rest assured that 1) I have never searched for strings like "Hello Kitty", and 2) I don't have any plugins like Customize Google. In the future, please kindly research an issue before arguing for the sake of argument.
I understand that while it might not be a threat to privacy, I find it annoying that as I type auto-complete keeps popping up, considering it wasn't on before and now all of a sudden is; which I find very strange. I try to limit the plugins that I install on my computer, but the ones I have installed are ones I have used before, none of which are new to me and my system; and thus are ones I've never had any complications with. My current installed plugings are as follows; Adobe Acrobat DivX Player Netscape Plugin (<< I don't remember installing this, what is it?) DivX Web Player iTunes Application Detector (again I didn't install this, did it install with iTunes?) Windows Media Player FF Plugin Mozilla Default Plugin Quake Live Quick Time Plugin 7.6 (again did this installed with quicktime?) Shockwave Flash Shockwave for director (whats that?) Silverlight Plugin Windows Presentation Foundation (whats this?) Those are my current plugins from what I can see. It's strange, there are a couple on there I don't ever remembering installing, so if anyone could also shed some light on those (i've indicated the ones). Thanks again all!
Thanks for that info, but i have done the research and I know what google auto-complete is, however, usually when it is on, it is usually to do with FF's settings... I've experienced this before and I've editided the neccessary settings, such as unchecking the fields like "remeber what i've...". My problem is that auto-complete is on, even after the neccessary settings have been edited; which is what I find strange. Regardless if it is activated due to FF's 'normal' behaviour as you've said, the point is, after changing the settings (which I've done before) is not working anymore (this is only for google, other forms and fields are fine).
Yeah, as I said it's not caused by a plugin but is default behavior. The corresponding Firefox settings can be found under firefox advanced config (about:config in Firefox's address bar), then by filtering for the string "autocomplete".
will do BTW: i guess i was just excited about disagreeing with you, again sorry, if it helps i do actually refer to myself as a plank anyway, back on topic DivX Player Netscape Plugin - a DivX movie player iTunes Application Detector - comes with FF Quick Time Plugin 7.6 - you must have downloaded & installed it Shockwave for director -a full feachered multimedia authoring tool Windows Presentation Foundation - is a graphical subsystem in .NET Framework 3.0, if your that interested here's the wiki page AT's comments were aimed at me
Thanks for the tips Anti-Trend. I entered http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0 instead of the normal google.co.uk and auto-complete/querey suggestions is 'disabled'. Now the thing is, is there away to permanantly have it disabled with out continually having to add 'webhp?complete=0', or without having to make http://www.google.co.uk/webhp?complete=0] as my homepage (i'd rather just have it as http://www.google.co.uk). Thanks for the help. Thanks for help aswell Donkey42, and sorry for misunderstanding!
lol ok, but, although we're one step closer to a solution, we still havn't reached it, any ideas on how to fully disable googles auto-complete/querey search?
The corresponding Firefox settings can be found under firefox advanced config (about:config in Firefox's address bar), then by filtering for the string "autocomplete".
Thanks for the help all, especially AT. I appreciate it. As usual members of HF are friendly and helpful...!
