Right as far as i know overclocking is to make your processor faster, And thats as far as my knowledge on the matter goes :/..

So what i wanna know is why overclock, what are the benefits ( iguess you wouldnt need to to it in say an office enviroment)? Does it make your processor (and maybe MB, ram etc) die sonner that they should? Do you need more cooling parts to help with this new speed? And anything i missed that i should know about overclocking... Thanks, Jay.

The only purpose of overclocking is to increase system performance (i.e increase the speed of your CPU so that it may compute faster).

Yes, overclocking definitely robs life out of your CPU. This is because you are forcing your CPU to run at a certain speed and an increase in speed increases both temperature and current, which is not good for longevity. As far as how long will your CPU last while overclocked - I don't know. A long long time, assuming you have good cooling of course, which brings me to your next question. And no, your motherboard and its peripherals do not die sooner.

If you're using a stock CPU cooler I would definitely recommend you get a nicer cooler that has copper heatsinks, as this is a better conductor than aluminum and steel and is also the best you can get.

    Best,

overclocking ruined by gfx card. just one morning found two blown capacitors. if you are doing this, make sure that you have a good cooling system.

Did you overclock the VGA card or the CPU?

did it with the graphics card. it was a 512mb 7300 GT. you think it can be fixed with replacing the capacitors?

Yeah that what i thought. I would feel uneasy if it was done by the CPU. Anyway, i don't know if replacing capacitors would help but my guess is, if they look burnt out and you happen to have a soldering tool and spare capacitors... i would definitely give it a try.

overclocking speed up yur processor , but its weaken the processor hence making the dying pre mature. if the need arises one can overclock but with caution to improve the cooling system of your computer
