Hi. I have a 1 GB Toshiba USB external HDD, connected to a Satellite L500 with Win7 Professional 64bits, and when I don't use it for a certain amount of time it goes to “sleep”, I guess for energy saving, and it take a lot of time to “awake”. Is there any way that I can configure this timeout? Or even set it to “don’t sleep at all”? Thanks in advance. Regards from Monterrey, México.
Hi, There is a setting that allows windows to control power to USB ports. This may be causing the problems you are having. If you open up device manager, (right click my computer icon, choose manage, then device manager from the window that opens) look for universal serial bus controller menu. Expand that menu and look for the USB root Hub line items. If you right click one of them, choose properties, it will open a window with several tabs. Choose the power management tab. Then uncheck the box that says allow windows to turn off this device to save power. You may want to do this to all of the usb root hub options because its really hard to tell which one goes to which usb port. This essentially will leave all of your USB ports powered on all the time while the computer is on.
Thanks a lot, Wildcard, but it doesn't work. I did these but my external HDD still goes to sleep (not turn off) I’ve download a program from Toshiba, “Toshiba_drive_converter_v1.10.exe” but the only steps mentioned in the page are: 1. Download the program; 2. Run it; 3. follow the instructions. Maybe one day I’ll have the courage to run it, and hopping not deleting my entire information. Thanks for your concern. P.S - Do that for the rest of your USB ports there to insure you that this thing isn't going to happen to you next tiime ... You can try go to "My Computer" there you'll see your HDD letter right click on it and then click on preperties and try to find something that is realated 2 your problem And you can go to "Start" and in the command write "Mmc" aprove the "Permission" alert from windows and then a window will pop up , then , choose "File" and go to "Add/Remove Snap-in" duble click at "Disk Managment" from the list there and click on Finish , then , click OK and you'll now be able to see your HDD's settings and check if there is a "Special settings" there from Toshiba or not ... I have a Hitachi 1TB drive with 335GB of used space running under Win 7 Ultimate and if I access it directly from Computer it usually takes about 3-5 seconds to read the contents, I just wait for the Green colour to fill the address bar. How long does yours take as it will depend on how much stuff you have on there?
You also might try attaching the drive to a Windows PC or laptop via a USB port and using the Drive Monitor to check the properties of the drive. P.S - That file came from another source . So please , check it with your AntiVirus before using it ...
Thanks, Michael . When I try to Open the virtual disc, the message “Windows cannot get access to the disc” (in Spanish, “Widnows no puede obtener acceso a este disco”) appears. I’ve also download the Removal Tool, I’ve asked Toshiba via email and they answered me that installing this tool removes all data, so I have to backup first (attach with the answer). And the device doesn’t have any install disc L
