Me and Sniper are working on tweaking the topics on HWF a bit. Since this is about our members, we would ask you to fill out this poll.

Which topics on HWF should be given more attention? Or is there any other topic that would be great for having on HWF? Are there any topics that should be given less attention?

well i presume you mean: how could HWF be reorganized due to the integration of many technologies nowadays, and i would suggest additional sub forums that a statically linked to other sub forums (NASs should be under storage and under networking)

    is that what you want?

No, it's more to check what people are most interested in.

well I choose Networking & Security and Software: Linux, BSD and Open Source.

    Networking and Security
simply because Networking and Security are two very huge topics and often thing may be interchangeable with either or both headings, in fact many noobs may easily post in the incorrect forum if they were separated, hhmmm.

I have no suggestions for Networking and Security, I just thought it needed saying so someone may make a suggestion.

Software: Linux, BSD and Open Source.

Linux and BSD and Open Source are also huge topics, but as they (Linux & BSD) are not as popular as Win personally I'm not sure the unpopularity could warrant a forum dedicated to it, however i think Open Source is deserving of it's own forum as the world of Open Source will only increase in size

as I've already stated that Linux & BSD is not necessarily deserving of their own forums, however, their would user base increase as people would be more willing to test the water with many of the free OS's if they were encouraged by the existence of additional forums at the prestigious HWF

    suggestions?

Edit: It would be feasible to have Linux, BSD, etc. etc. to have the same forum but have various sub forums for the different sections, ie. kernel, hardware, embedded, noobs etc. etc.

Edit: something else that would increase the user base is if the so called Law was abolished and instead punishment for things were handled by Linux sys admins as most know how the world actually works as appose to so called Judges

    Something else:

I didn't tick any OS, because I think that they should be touched only in the sense that:
    1. Hardware compatibility issues with specific OSs/versions (like Windows XP 64bit had terrible driver support etc)
    2. Which OS is better for which hardware
    3. Custom drivers and such

    very good ideas
64bit would make a good OS in theory, however, we don't live in theory, e.g. i personally have both 32 Firefox & 64 Waterfox and 32 & 64 Java (JDK which includes JRE) because it's not a perfect world, in a perfect world anybody would only need 1 browser & Java installed

edit: sorry edijs i agree OS should be separately categorized into 64, 32 and both for general OS and anything conflicting because of both 32 & 64
that depends on what exactly you are doing, e.g. most people use Win [ot]including me :( for now [/ot]therefore generally better hardware support exists on Win, however, the people using Linux, BSD etc. etc. do have better support because they take full responsibility for everything on there system including the writing of drivers
are you suggesting a custom online driver database ?
because that would be a brilliant idea although actually implementing it would be a nightmare

My 2 cents on the 64/32-bit issue: don't separate it by that. I haven't seen enough issues around the web, or here that make me think there's a call for that sort of split. To me, it seems as though it might make things more complicated, unnecessarily so. If there's a trend, go for it, but if not, this might not be the division to run with. The OS moves that would make better sense: Legacy Windows. IIRC, Windows XP is supported through 2014, and, if I recall, everything older than that is no longer supported by Microsoft.
For the *nix end: Possibly split this based on the originating distribution: Debian-based, Redhat-based, etc, and also split *BSD off in its own category or just lump it in with other non-Linux OS that aren't covered.

I'd say look at what's coming up frequently. If there's enough threads relating to one area, it might be time to consider moving it to its own category. I'd advise adding new sections just to add them, because it doesn't always work the way you'd like...at least from what I saw.

yes, i agree, however, x32 will soon be obsolete completely replaced by x64 (things always move on) although i would still probably support it on maybe a legacy forum, and just because MS have decided to withdraw support doesn't mean we should also withdraw support for anything as personally still remember some old DOS stuff that may be useful to someone playing around with DOS, as with most things quite often the answer to a new problem probably lies in the past e.g. old radio is now called Wireless so searching wireless may not reveal the answer however searching old radio may as they use the same tech
well, all *nix are a different matter entirely as a "Proper" *nix enthusiast has to fully understand almost everything in order config it to work on their OS
that may sound like a good idea, however, the past is still very important to discover how something came about so is easier to work with [ot]gud fun eh![/ot]

BTW: it nearly looks like i know what i'm talking about
