Leet-speak (L33t, 133t, L337 etc.) Actually began as hacker terminology, it was more or less dirived from the work 'elite'. It's mostly an MMO/online chatroom filler language but you'll see it in many popular forums. Not so much on HWF's as we have more or less condoned posts that are a challege to read and distracting (basically ones made up of internet lingo type stuff). But if you plan on fitting in on certian severs you'll need to recognize a few of the more common works out there, and you can impress your l33t-savvy buds with some other not so well known ones too.
This is obviously the tip of the iceburg in terms of the vocabulary out there but it's a start:
First get used to replacing letters with numbers or symbols. You can be really creative in what you replace but generally you can just get more l33t umph from sticking in the following.
-0 An obvious replacement for the o/O character, for intance "c0ws are sweet!"
-3 Replaces the e/E. As in "I 3at my wh3ati3s".
-7 Not as common but can be used as a substitute for the letter t/T. For instance "7oo bad for you!"
-1 Often used in place of l or sometimes i/I as in "1et my codp1ece go!" It get's tricky as it can be seen as both letters.
-! A substitue for the letter i/I "Back !n the old days kids used to play w!th toys"
-4 Can be used as a makeshift a/A, "Wh4t the cr4p!"
There are more but these are among the most c0mm0n.
EDIT: Waffles was kind enough to remind me of 5, as in s/S, "5h!7 ! 5uck!"
-X0r/x0r- A suffix for extra l33t body to your words. Among the most popular are "You HaX0r!" or "You SuX0r!" (as in hacker and sucker). If you're feeling imaginative you can also use xx0r,z0r, and XX0rz etc.
pwn- Origionally a bad typo for "own" as in to beat someone badly or 'own' them in a figurative sence. "I'll so pwn you next match!" Or "I pwned you again!"
j00- You, for instance "no soup for j00!"
w00t- Probably the second most well know of the batch, there's no standard definition for it but more of less it just means Yay! (though sometimes sarcastically).
pr0n- The l33t form of porn.
uber- A widely used prefix that means what it would in standard english, extremely. "Wow, you were pwned uber-bad." It can also be used on it's own as an adjective, for example: "That mithril bra is uber!"
w0rd- Can be used as a greeting or fairwell term. Or to express ones agreement or acknowledgement.
phear- (or ph34r, f34r,ph33r, etc). As in fear, "Phear my l33tness!"
gnos- (or gn0s) Just means nooo! "Gnos, my boots!"
-age- Suffix to describe a state of being for a given noun. "Sweet b00bage!"
obobs- Once a typo for boobs. Apparently this is a hard to spell word as I'm seen "bobos" bjoobies" and "buubes" (though they may be intentional).
Last but not least n00b- You'll find most gaming forums riddled with this one. It's a term to describe an inexperienced person, a new-guy, newbie, newb etc. "Wh47 4 dumb n00b!"
These are among the more useful of the bunch but as I said, there are a ton of these including as many variations as you could imagine. Feel free to add to the list!
