I got wireless broadband a few days ago and compared to dial up its a dream. Its a 192kb bandwidth connection and the antenna is about a 100 metres away from my house so i figure that it should be a strong connection I live in south africa and compared to where most of you live in terms of technology and inferstructure and notibly internet connections it would be comparing the nasa space station to a small mud hut and people in loin cloths. The adsl here is rediculusly expensive hence the wireless What i want to know is how stable wireless connections are because when i update my AVG virus protection software it dowloads for a while and then it comes up with an error (The request timed out and could not be completed. The update server connection was interrupted) and i have to start again. I have downloaded some music and that was fine, so if it not the connection then what is it ??.
well, what can i say good about AVG erm....erm....erm well the best thing about AVG is: NOTHING install and use Avast 4.7, IMO much better than AVG
Thanx ill do that. So whats so very bad about avg. Because judging by your, er.....subtle undercurrents about avg youve had a bad experience. But it wasnt avg. I fixed the problem by asking the isp guy to lower my frequency and that is now giving me a much stronger connection.
I use AVG... What's wrong with it? Once you have it configured properly it's fine (turn off antivirus scanning every time you boot up).
Theres not a lot wrong with AVG, I still use it. Mind you I don't get viruses (I hope heh). 100 metres is quite far away for a wireless signal. It does depend on what obstructions are in the way, inside a building I doubt it would reach that far. So in open spaces the signal would be much better (direct line of sight). You can check your wireless connection strength in windows. For a wifi G connection (802.11g) under 18mbps I usually lose packets of data. for a B connection its different.
100m away from your HOUSE??? Are you sure you're not stealing it from someone else? Anyway, try and make sure your computer is as near to a window, as walls weaken the signal.

It depends where abouts you live (in the UK). If you live in a big city then you probably would find a wireless connection pretty easily. Where I live, it's surrounded by old people and we are the only ones that has it. But yeah, wireless networks are pretty popular over here, and I know many people who have one.
I sometimes pick up a wireless signal. But usually I don't. I can guess in my street that there would be quite a few wireless networks, and I'm only not detecting them because of all the signal loss from thick walls.
Ok, i think thomas means by he got a wireless broadband, is that, his broadband's infeed connection is wireless, unlike our regular ADSL which is connected over a phoneline. (Am I right??) Anyways, youre problem might have an issue with your connection to the net, ie. signal of your wireless broadband might be dropping. You said that when you are downloading music its fine but not when updating AVG. Maybe its bcoz the webserver where you download your music supports resuming of downloads.
No, I mean that we get our broadband through a phone line, but the modem that we use has 802.11b & 802.11g (wireless) and it can send the connection to other computers that have the password (128-bit WEP code).
Ok. If that's the case then no, I don't know anyone with wireless broadband like that, as I think it's a very expensive option compared to getting it through a phone line.
here we only have one phone line company and as they have a monopoly and are not controlled by the government they charge insane rates. >>Wirless is the cheapest way here
