That's been fixed in Dapper. They removed the bad Xorg update from the repositories and replaced it with a working one.

    Doubtful

Looking better than before. The purple theme looks good. Even the brown Ubuntu theme looks better than I remember it.

I'm with you guys, sudoers in *ubuntu is retarded. I don't understand what problem they're overcoming with that behaviour, but it's the single biggest detractor from that distro to me.

    ***/me hugs Debian***

    Indeed.

[ot]Although at the moment I am using Mandriva whilst downloading the testing image of Debian. For some reason when I upgrade to Etch, my system breaks  . Normally because of Xorg... So Rather than wasting 3-4 hours on the upgrade which fails, I will just install Etch and that's that.... [/ot]

BTW - I love purple!!!!! I like Debian better..... ;)

    You asked for it... :)

An operating system should not get in the way of the user. It should be transparent, if you will. Debian is more complicated to set up and use then ubuntu, thus it gets in the way more and slows you down. For this reason alone, ubuntu is a better OS. Ubuntu have put a lot of effort into making a solid, easy to use distribution that's great for beginners and experienced users alike. If Debian has any hope of attracting a new breed of users they will need to sort out their internal flame wars and concentrate on making an easier to use desktop.

I find the comment 'ubuntu means 'I can't configure Debian'' quite funny, but probably for the wrong reasons. What's so cool about using an OS that's difficult to use?

Ubuntu have taken the Debian base to the dry cleaners and come out with a shiny new suit. Stain free. :p

I'm glad Ubuntu is attractive to new users, but I'm also disturbed that it throws one of the major security concepts of a Unix system right out the window. I don't think having a nice, polished, easy-to-use distro is a bad thing at all. I do think that sacrificing 50% of your security for 0.0002% more convenience is absolutely stupid. Yes, I know it's still more secure than Windows, but this is teaching people bad habbits.

As for Debian, I don't find it at all hard to use, but I will concede that it could be daunting for a new user. At least part of the reason for this is that Debian gives you much, much more control over the installation process, what packages you want, and how to handle them. It does everything I want it to; no more, no less. A big problem for new users is not knowing what they want, so a myriad of choices would only be confusing. I would suggest that most users who love technology should start out with *ubuntu and once comfortable with the underlying concepts, take off the training wheels and try out Deb.
