Hi, Just tried to install the latest version of Opera (9.10) in Mandriva. I unpacked the tar file, but it would not create a directory - any ideas? David. EDIT: Have since got the file to create a directry (I was using the wrong syntax to change into the directory). I think I need to type . /configure now. Well, I just tried that, but got an error. I think I must need to type something after . /configure but I don't know what. Have installed from these type of files before but there have generally been instructions - not this time round though!
Thanks guys. I have tried to install the file to my Home directory, unpacking the file to that same directory, which creates a directory of its own. As I said, i've not had any trouble installing these tar files before. However, let's cut to the chase - thank you Mega - using the suggested RPM method is far easier! I did not actually know I could use this method at the time. I opened up Opera this morning and got a message saying that there is an updated version out (9.10) and would I like to download it? I clicked on the link and saw an option for a tar file download - which I took (I know how to install these I thought)! However, I just checked back on the site and if I'd concentrated properly, I would have seen a link for a download for Mandriva - the RPM file (duuuuuh!) :doh: :x: Too hasty for my own good sometimes! Just for information, you generally type ./configure when you're building a program from sources. Since Opera is proprietary, they don't release the source code and so it can't be built like normal software. They have good support for various Linux distros, which is impressive.
for Mepis and Kubuntu or Unbuntu Dapper or edgy configaration / installation of some stuff it's far easier with Automatix2 give it a go, you'll see
