A PC for my buddy..

how's it going all?

right, I'm typing this with my buddy, and he has a budget of exactly £1000 - which we worked out to be $1842.24USD to spend on a PC for....*shock horror* gaming

anyway. given that this isn't a great deal of cash for say, an alienware PC, can you give us a little help in deciding what to get for this cash?

It's more bang for the buck, so to speak. So I'm guessing athlon. He already has the monitor and peripherals etc, so only the tower, drives etc etc are needed.

Suggestions to make this a decent PC greatly appreciated.

Thanks y'all :)

for that kinda money you can build a high end pc. (i.e. athlon 64, nforce3, x800xt or 6800ultra, water cooling, insane amount of ram)
cause my system only cost me a little over $700

really? we priced up a couple of things - athlon 64 3000, 512ram, 120gb hard disk etc etc, and came out at around 1100 quid. which sorta sucked. gfx was a 9800non pro. reckon the 9600xt would be a better bet?

Yeah I'd like to be on a tight budget like that !

Here's what I cam up with:

CPU: Athlon 64 3200+ $270
Mobo: Asus K8V $111
RAM: Corsair XMS 2x512mb 2-3-3-6 Black heat spreader $276
Video Card: Sapphire X800 Pro 256mb VIVO OEM $445
Sound: Audigy 2 ZS $88
(some here hate it but I have one and have never had any problems with it, great card IMHO)
PSU: Antec TrueBlue 480W $89
CD/DVD: LITE-ON CD-RW 52x32x52 Black $33
LITE-ON DVD 16X Black $25
HDD: 2x Western Digital Raptor 36.7gb 10k rpm $111 x 2 ($222)
Floppy $11 (always good to have one: bios flash, etc)
Case: Antec PlusView 1000AMG $69

Total $1639 + tax

I shopped at newegg since I don't know any British sites

The PRO X800 is £309.41 from ebuyer.com, which is $570.32 USD, and the processor is £213.77 GBP - $394.027 USD

So neweggs prices are a hell of a lot better than ebuyer. And thats the cheapest place I know of.

Thanks, it helped! :)
