alright so randomly when i was on my computer yesterday all of a sudden everything connected to my computer by usb stopped working.. i tried reconnecting.. restarting etc. but everytime i plug anything in by usb it says unknown device and doesn't work not sure if maybe usb ports got fried somehow.. but that seems unlikely because they still detect that something's connected and then i plugged in a serial mouse and keyboard and they work so i'm not quite sure what happened or why.. appreciate any help given!

try another USB port or if your using a USB hub try plugging the hub into a different port or try plugging the peripherals directly into the USB port (not into the hub, cos the hub may be dead

BTW: is the hub receiving power or is it self powered

i've tried every usb port my computer has and under device manager it says i have usb root hub but i only have singular usb ports so i'm assuming the usb ports are getting power from the mobo
is there a chance the usb ports could be dead? cuz they still realize that there's something attached it just doesn't work..
btw just figured out they're all self-powered

remove everything saying USB from device manager (and unplug ALL USB devices) then reboot and hopefully USB will be detected at next boot, if if doesn't get detected try re-adding the drivers manually in contol panel

BTW: it's quite common for USB ports to suddenly stop working

alright i'll try that but just to clarify it detects it, but it says it malfunctioned and then whatevers connected by usb doesn't work
ok well i tried that and it didn't work.. see whenever i plug something into any usb port it detects it but it comes up with the response that it's an unknown device and the device doesn't work.. for example, i plug in my g5 mouse, software installed already, and it pops up as unknown device but installed and ready to use but there's no power to the mouse, the lights don't come on and the mouse doesn't move.. no idea why this happens and no clue how to fix it.. the reason i'm so confused is because it still detects it and if the usb ports weren't working then it wouldn't detect it at all right?

not neccisarily, but your USB is malfunctioning somehow, you need to make sure the USB is malfunctioning or Windows is being a tw4t (as usual) to do this you need to either download a Live CD (of linux) or purchase a PCI card like this

BTW: where in the us do you live, or where do you ussually purchase your PC items

well, from Newegg i found this cheap and cheerful one, but you may prrefer a more expensive name brand like this or you may prefer a 4 external ports like this

Edit:BTW: i'm not sure but i think you would be better to disable the onboard USB controller before adding a USB card
