    I currently have a P4 505j, it is 2.66 ghz overclocked to 2.94 1 mb L2 cache

I am either thinking of upgrading to a faster P4 with larger cache or switching the motherboard and cpu for a core 2 duo set up

I have an older asrock motherboard currently 775V88 i think is what it is

I do do some gaming with this rig star trek armada 2, age of empires3, and star trek legacy

the latter requieres at least a P4 2.66ghz cpu
I also am wondering how i would go about comparing the core 2's too the P4's
what do you all think i should

definetely go with the core 2 duo. for the price it is extremely fast compared to the p4. unless of course the motherboard you want to use with it will be expensive. it is just a question of how much you want to spend. i think with a decent graphics card a new p4 will suit you fine.

i was thinking core 2 duo but i was just not sure how i should compare the two
I think i will go that way with the core 2 duo
as for graphics i have an ati 9600 radeon
any sugestions on if i should keep that or not and what mother boards do you folks suggest for core 2 duo's

If you're going to get a Core 2 Duo, you'll need a new motherboard and RAM. The motherboard will have to be PCI-E, and so you'll need a new video card. A good card would be an nVidia 7600 card.

I would go for the duo core. However, as Addis mentioned you have all the other new components to consider....
Speed is not everything. With the duo core it is also efficiency and productivity.
It will mean that your PC does not have to be committed to one activity only, like gaming. With the right configuration you should be able to do a lot more multitasking with your system.

Yea get Core2Duo, sure it will cost more, but in the long run its going to be better, also if you decide to go Core 2 Duo and build a Core 2 Duo rig, then there is going to be more future upgradability and longer life :)

    very good point indeed
these are all things to consider
also tho i do not know if i will upgrade to vista in the future, i may switch to apple. but for now i think i will be staying with windows and although my rig currently is pretty good I just find it lacking at times
gaming is one big crap shoot also if i get more or two or three things going at once it gets hairy, Photoshop itunes instant messaging web browsing dvd or cd converting. it is all adding up, I would hope the dual core would help somewhat with that and slowly i would be upgrading to software that takes advantage of that
