Free Software Thread. All 100% legal. There's not much regarding animation, so the closest thing in that list is Blender. I don't have experience with animation software, so I can't say if that's the right software for your needs or how standard it is in the industry. It's free, so it can't hurt.

I edited your e-mail address so the spam-bots don't pick it up.

I'm gonna assume this is all *cough* legal *cough*...right, OJ?

We're not a warez site. Take that garbage to IRC.

There are plenty of Free/Open-Source 2D-animation toolkits such as KToon and Synfig. They are professional-grade tools which cost nothing.

You could use flash if you like, but it would be like trying to understand the full meaning of pi if you 'fancied having a look at maths', flash is hectically complicated but incredibly useful if you have a lot of time to learn it (i'm basically bitter because it still gets the better of me)

I personally use adobe fireworks for all my animation and web graphic needs. Flash is good too, its files are also smaller then the .gif files as well. I'm not sure if GIMP has animation capabilities but its a pretty good image manipulation program as well.

I use imageready (from cs2 when it was separated from photoshop) I can't seem to let go of it because some of the important features when it was a standalone haven't made it to the latest versions of photoshop cs3/4.

Macromedia flash is a good tool though it might be a little difficult to start on as your first choice. Plus, it's not free.

Here's a link you may find useful. It's free based solutions for your animation needs. I haven't fully checked every link but a little read will give you some insight what software might be best for you untill you progress and migrate to a commercial solution as your talents in animation progress. Visit here.

It's not really a pure animation program but it's definitely something good to learn on: Adobe After Effects
