Love the forums, been reading a good while but my first post. Anyways I hope someone here may be able to help, not loads of info around on xeons in forums etc. I got a dual CPU Dell powerEdge 1850 server, the current CPUs are 3.2Ghz/2MB 800FSB ("DEC CoC PROMO - 2nd CPU~DEC CoC PROMO - 2nd CPU" if that means anything). I can't for the life of me find out what scoket they are but I think they are 604 pin from the searching i've done. I'd like to upgrade them to 3.8s but want to make sure I'm buying the right processors. Would it be ok to assume all the Xeons with 800FBS should fit as in they have a certain socket type to themselves? At the time when I got the server there was an option to select 3.8s and even dual core 3.8s but the price was astronomical, so i'm hoping they used the same mobo to build mine as they would have if i selected the faster cpu option, so can just pull out the old CPUs and shove in the new ones. Its a bit of a nightmare trying to figure out Xeon ranges, any advice on what to be careful of/avoid would really be appricated if anyone knows much about them. I wish I could get more info on the server itself but Dell don't provide all that much technical spec as its listed in the order confirmation. I've not got access to the server at the moment to open it up and look as its in a data centre. Should I be ok just buying 2 xeon 3.8s with FBS800? Thanks.
Hi and welcome to HWF There are some ways to get all the info about the server you need Try this program: SISoftware Sandra The above program will be able to give you information on every part of hardware in your server, if the CPU is a SKT 604 and your motherboard is, then they should be incompatible, be sure to find the Make/Model of your Motherboard and check if the 3.8ghz Xeon is compatible. I hope this helps.
Well, one thing you should dig up is the manual or check Dell's website for the manual to bring up the specs. It's a bit hard to make recommendations without knowing the hardware specs. How old is this system?
Yeah i can understand its difficult to say with limited info. Tech specs are here: Documentation not a great deal of detail in it though. Server is a year old. Any ideas?
Man, that stuff is not easy to find. What I've found out is that the motherboard uses the Intel E7520 chipset, and that's typically paired with Socket 604 Xeons. The limitations thereof, I'm unsure of, so at this point, I will direct you to the gents over at 2CPU as there's more knowledge on Xeon's there. I'd like to say that any Socket 604 CPU will work, but I'm not 100% positive.
