Another question, if openGL is fucking up, by this i mean crashing whenever something goes to use it. The most basic card you can get depends on your motherboard. If you have AGP, then you can use a lot of the older cards, but none of the newest high end ones. If you have a PCI Express motherboard, then you will be limited to mid range and high end cards. The X550 is not a gaming card, my laptop has a mobility X700, and it doesn't perform brilliantly in games. You could look to upgrade to an nVidia 6 series, or a 7600GT card. You'll need to make sure its compatible with your motherboard first though.
For rendering and such i have no clue what is the best card availible. For gaming the best setup would be two nvidia geforce 8800gtx's in sli.
Just keep in mind that Radeon is planning to release it's R600 series cards soon and they are looking to dethrone the 8000 series in case you were planning on upgrading shortly.
