My brother has the above laptop

(eBay: SHARP PC- GP1415 AMD Athlon XP 1400+ 30GB 368MB RAM PSU (item 260066100698 end time Dec-19-06 12:53:27 PST))

with a 20gb HDD Hitachi DK23DA-30F ATA. (Hitachi Hard Disk Drives)

He wanted to upgrade it so he purchased a Hitachi MDL: IC25N080ATMR04-0

( Buy Online NOW - Hard Drive HDD 80GB 2.5in IDE UDMA100 PATA (IDE, UDMA, EIDE))

When I went round to swap the drives the one I took out differed from the new one in that the new one had pins protruding from the HDD and would not fit the laptop. the older one plugged into the pins which are already part of the laptop.

can you advise what type of drive I would need to get to upgrade this laptop, bar getting an external HDD

    Many thanks.

You may need to take the caddy off the old hard drive and connect it to the new hard drive. Most laptops use caddies as a way to ensure a hard drive will fit correctly.

Thanks for the response. I did fit the new drive into the caddy and it slid in, but the connecters differ between the two drives. the new drive has the pins protruding wheras the old drive connected to pins in the laptop itself

That's a pretty rare setup you've got there. Almost all laptop drives have pins protruding. Probably best you contact the original equipment manufacturer
