Hey, I am in need of a long Ethernet Cable but unaware how much they cost or where to get from, any pointers? Thanks.
My local computer computer shop charged me £0.50 per meter i wanted and so got 30 meters for £15 which i thought was a bargain. Also at my old school, i went and asked the computer technician there one lunch time and he made me up 20 meters for free. Most computer shops will make you some up any length you want for a reasonable price.
why not get a crimper and make the cables yourself, look @ this guide, also look here - for some tips
Yea, those prepackaged cables at the big-box stores are outrageously expensive and marked up. ie. I got a 25' one ( or something like that) for my PS2 a few years ago from Best Buy and they wanted $20-$30 for it. Fortunately I knew someone that worked there and he got it for $5.
How about 2 wire? If you want to go over 100 meters with a simple network, you may consider using 2-wire in place of ethernet cable. You have to buy special abaters, but after 100 meters or so, the cost becomes less that ethernet. You use cheap telephone or electrical wire and do not need repeater for very long runs. But the speed is much less, only 10 MBPS instead of 100 MBPS. For some simple setups this is good enough. Here is a link to the site: 2Wire.com: Home I have used it and am happy with the results. Solow, but very robust.
You can buy from the any pc showroom... Rate is depend on showroom.. You just try from electric shop because from there you get that in cheap rate...
Interesting electric shops you guys have over there. For some reason I haven't found any place around where I live that will just make the ethernet cable for me... Therefore, I was going to suggest amazon.com. They have a large selection of all sorts of lengths. I got one for pretty good price there once; it was on sale at the time.
There is not special adapters needed you simply put it throught a switch or a repeater at the hundred metre mark and there you go another hundred meters and you still get full speed. Using CAT 2 cable would only give you about 4Mb/s. Also as the other post suggest buying a reel of cable and ur own RJ45 connectors if definatly the cheapest way to go Hope this helps Dave
