Rendering problem with FX5700

Hi, I just set up a new system with a Chaintech FX5700 256MB card (not an LE or Ultra, the standard 5700), and I'm having problems with rendering in the 3D games I've tried so far (Warcraft 3: FT and RTCW multiplayer). IN RTCW (multiplayer), either half the screen or random parts of the screen will flicker, and in WC3 it's random, though it often happens in vertical rows of undrawn fog-of-war. Also, the problems don't show up in RTCW single player, despite using the same settings I used for multiplayer. I've tried different monitors and 3 different versions of the detonator drivers, as well as different resolutions and refresh rates. I've tried turning AA, AF, and Vsync off, and the problem still shows up. I have a Soyo KT600 w/ Athlon XP3200+ and 512MB Mushkin PC3200 DDR; no problems with the setup aside from this video issue. Any suggestions?

is the card new? or have u installed it from a previous machine? if so what was the previous spec machine you were using and did you have any problems?

Oh, it's a brand new card. Everything is new in this system, except the CD/DVD drives. I still need to try my old video card in the new system and see if it happens with the different card, but I'm actually at work right now, so I won't be able to till tonight...

Everything is all new - the card, motherboard, processor, RAM, case, hard drive, and a fresh copy of XP SP1. It looks like a driver problem, but it's occuring with different driver versions, so I'm looking for known issues with the detonator drivers, or known issues with the FX5700 cards.

I would try a different card, to rule out the 5700 being defective. Even better: try it in a known working system to rule out there being some weird issue between your system and the card. Crazy, but sometimes wierd stuff happens.

I tested my old card in my new comp, everything ran fine, and tested my new card in a friend's comp, which also ran fine...so it's looking more like a driver issue or 'weird' Chaintech FX5700/Soyo KT600 incompatibility issue. I never heard of the omega drivers, but I'll give them a try after work. Thanks, everyone, for all the help so far. If the omega ones don't work, I'm just gonna RMA the card, and blow a paycheck on a 6800GT...

I tried the Omega drivers, but the same problem occured again. Since the new system appears ok (through trying another card) and the card appears ok (through trying it in another system), I have no idea what else could be wrong. I'm returning the 5700, gonna wait for a good deal on a 6800 or 6800GT. Anyone have any suggestions on what brands are best for 6800 cards?

While I have no love for PNY memory (stay far, far away), their video cards are pretty good, and tend to be some of the cheaper ones out there. I've also heard some good things about BFGTech's cards too. MSI, Asus and Gigabyte are good choices too, although Asus tends to be a bit pricier than similar cards. MSI isn't dirt cheap, but they usually have a lot of extra's packaged with their products.

what do you mean when you say memory? RAM or flash type. i find flash from PNY pretty good but thats only me.

Their memory. Overpriced sticks of crap. Every time I've used their memory, I've ended up with an unstable PC.

Weird... I did a full reformat/reinstall of window, tried the 61.76 (WHQL/DX9b certified, not the 61.77 non-WHQL/DX9c ones), and everything worked perfect. No explaination why it works now, but I guess I'll keep the 5700, since it should still run Doom 3 at decent quality...

it was most likely that that you had DirectX 9b installed, but the drivers were were for DX9c version, which comes with SP2, unless you had installed DX9c without SP2?

I had DX9b installed with SP1, and put on the 61.77 drivers (the DX9c ones, which I didn't notice at the time). Later, while troubleshooting, I installed the DX9c standalone (without SP2) and the problem still showed up...so something must've happened in the process of installing/uninstalling drivers that messed up...something.

If anyone gets this problem in the future, just do a reinstall of Windows and stay with SP1/DX9b/Detonator 61.76 or SP2/DX9c/Detonator 61.77. I'm waiting for the official SP2 release before trying the new 61.77 Detonator drivers or DX9c.
