basically DNS (Domain Name Servers) translate or convert a websites IP address into a readable website name e.g. HWF's IP is: 64.131.65.241

then your browser know where you want to go

if you type that IP into your browsers address bar it will bring up HWF, plus if you type the IP, the page appears much faster than if you type HWF, this is because your system doesn't have to contact the DNS for the readable address to be translated into an IP

Edit: to find a websites IP address type it into here

    what are DNS's

This will only work if a website has its own dedicated IP address, a lot of websites have shared IP address ;) .

    what are DNS's

thankies, i didn't realize that shared ip's were used to make sure there were enough ip's for every new site

thankies, i'm wrong again[ot]one day i may post something that's correct[/ot]BTW: thank you guys, i need you all to make sure i'm correct[ot]& Addis, how old are you really ?[/ot]thank you

Edit: presumably HWF has a dedicated ip, so, i wasn't wrong about typing 64.131.65.241 for HWF

    what are DNS's

thankies, there's a load of crap i still need to learn, i feel like i'll never stop learning, glad you guys are here to correct me though:good:

    Edit: reading AS:Hosted

Edit: you can change your DSN, as some ISP default DNS are a little unreliable, well virgin.net's DNS are, thats why i switched to OpenDNS

if your net connection occasionally doesn't work try using a free DNS like those provided by OpenDNS

16 16, well congrats, you know a lot of crap about computers, when did you start browsing HWF, comparing the crap i think i know with the stuff you know, you must have started on HWF when you were about 10, i've being on HWF about 18 months

BTW: glad your here to help us learn & the other guys that are more than a bit good

Edit:  just noticed, you've being on HWF since Jan 2004, HWF is great, you don't get banned for making a mistake, unlike on some forums :good:
