Hi all, Back again with another problem, I've been building a new PC and am almost at the point where I am ready to power up and install Windows Vista HP....but I want to format and partition the HDD.....the problem I have is that of the 2 Comps I have already, a laptop and a PC, neither has a FDD, and both are running Vista which doesn't allow the opportunity of creating a boot disk...because of the new Vista Boot process. I could try to create a bootable USB flash drive and boot from this, but as both PC's are running Vista, I havn't got access to any bootsector.bin files etc to place on the USB flash drive....... I'm wondering if I can install the new HDD for the new build into the PC running Vista and use some utility (like Partition Magic or similar) to format and partition it, then remove it to place it in the new build PC..... HAs anyone got any suggestions..... Ideally if anyone knows of a free downloadable partition utility they can recommed this would be a great help...as funds are now very tight....
yeah, thisits the one with this description after it's downloaded you need to burn the .iso image to a CD with something like nero or CDBurnerXP and boot from the CD BTW: CDBurnerXP is FREE
Hi Donkey, thanks for the info, I've downlaoded and burned the disc, and hopefully this will sort this out, I've got my PC all set, all apart from the main part, CPU, waitng for that to fit to mobo and then good to go, got everything else ready and waiting.....damned e-bay sellers.....been waiting 3 weeks now, given up on the 1st one coming so bought another now, and waiting for that to arrive....watch this space, I'll let you know how I get on..... Many thanks again for the info your a star.... Karen
One thing though, I noticed when I used file explorer to check the contents of the CD after burning it, that NIS 2007 detected a trojan......clrcmos.exe....any ideas on this...?????
i'm not good with anything to do with viruses, as i use Linux and virus protection isn't required, however, clrcmos.exe does sound like it could potentially be a big problem, if you separate the name, clr = clear, cmos = BIOS, so you should at least backup your BIOS, you is the maker of your BIOS (phoenix, American Megatrends Incorparated (AMI)) the BIOS manufacturer will have a utility the backup the BIOS available on their website, backup the BIOS & keep the backups safe, also what is your OS (Operating System) ?, and what antivirus are you currently using ? Edit:  just noticed Vista in your sig  Edit: just checked your mobo manufacturers site, your BIOS is Award, and award was bought by Phoenix in about 2003 - 2004 ish, so i'll just check phoenix's site, to find what you need to download to backup your BIOS, yes i do feel like a plank  Edit: ASUS actually host the BIOS flash utility themselves, the flash utility is here, download it BTW: the Europe server doesn't work for me, if it doesn't work for you use the Global, the BIOS flashing or backup needs to be done from a floppy boot disk, unless your BIOS allows you to update or backup, from within the BIOS, if you don't have a bootdisc & you need 1 you download 1 from Bootdisk BTW: if you want any more help, just ask.
Hi donkey, I did a google search on clrcmos.exe and apparently its a tool to clear cmos, similar to killcmos etc, and as it is on the boot disk iso I'm assuming it's been included as a tool/util to use whenever u need to clr cmos instead of having to remove battery from mobo or change jumper settings on the mobo.....I was quite concerned at first, as using NIS 2007 to try an dremove the trojan, NIS 2007 said it couldn't remove it, but after I removed the CD from the drive, and tried again, then NIS succesfully removed it, so it's definitely got something to do with the disc, I think what I'll do is delete that file from the disc before using it on the new build as the nnew build won't have any anti-virus software installed initially to prevent the .exe from running as the NIS 2007 did on the PC used to download the iso, I'll then use NIS 2007 to remove the trojan again after deleting the file from the disc, re-boot and then try to browse the disc contents again to see if the trojan is still detected.....I'll post a little later to let youy know if this works... Thanks Karen
yeah, sounds logical NIS 2k7 is ok but by far the best antivirus software for Win is Avast and avast is FREE no, it'll be ok to leave it on, blame me, when i hear "Virus" & "Vista" in the same sentence, alarm bells go off i my head, i should have checked the .iso contents before i posted it for you, sorry honey, but i'll try to remember that, probably without success because my memory is like a fridge magnet, it keeps falling off
