Hi, I have a USB 2.0 External Harddrive 60 GB, its a 2.5 inch harddrive in a usb 2.0 enclosure i was making heavy use of it when it stopped working it makes a loud vibrating noise which its not supposed to make and it won't work and you can see some error: device cannot start in device manager, its both red and green lights are on all the time... in normal working idle condition its supposed to be green if you move it around for a second or two it works and the icon of it appears on my computer but it goes away... does anyone know what happend if its repairable, wether the enclosure is broken or the harddrive is broken? the Harddrive is by toshiba i know cause i opened the box... Also if you drop the harddrive a bit it would make a loud vibrating noise but now if you even shake it a bit it vibrates and the harddrives spinning stops. if you just hold it that way... it wont start again till you let go of it or reposition it...
i you've dismantled it you could try disconnecting the HDD from the enclosure & reconnect all connections however, the HDD has probably gone to the big computer store in the sky, but it's worth a try Edit: the noise will be coming from the HDD as there are no moving parts in a USB enclusure, but totally disconnecting & reconnecting the HDD may work[ot]if the external drive is haunted, taking it for a drive may also fix it[/ot]
i disconnected reconnected many times... "the HDD has probably gone to the big computer store in the sky," do you mean by that that my harddrive is useless... the data inside it is not my concern i wish the harddrive would work again.... i see hope cause it worked for a second orr two before but now that has stopped...
if you've tried disconnecting & reconnecting all connections inside the enclosure & USB connections, then unfortunately the HDD is dead[ot]have a party and give it a good send off[/ot]sorry BTW: you could buy a new 2.5" HDD and put it inside the existing enclosure Edit: computer hardware is very sensitive & can stop working for no apparent reason
funny how the topic below the one which says something about destroying a harddrive has the same exact problem... its a toshiba 60 gb just like mine and it makes grinding noise just like mines.. a friend of mine said that the harddrive you are holding in your hand ( im not confusing it to the enclosure ) has a cover around it which you can get changed really cheap and it might solve the problem...
HDD = Hard Disk Drive, just buy a new hard disk drive & put it inside the enclosure the USB part is a 2.5" HDD to USB convertor / adaptor woth trying
i was wondering if its safe to open the harddrive and check it out... or will its magnetic layers get exposed or something im not good at hardwares... cause it works for a second or two i thought maybe its rotating disk is obstructed maybe if i loosen up the screws or something it might fix....
no, because HDDs are sealed to protect them from dust, unless you have a clean room at home and you have a way to clean every spec of dust & everything else off the HDD (impossible) BTW: good idea though, but unfortunatly it will kill the drive perminently Never open a HDD Edit: if you bang the drive on a desk or something but you risk killing it, or is it still under warranty ?
