Can I get a PCI to work in a PCI-X?

Hey folks,

Bought a card and don't know if it will work on my machine. (it is in the mail) I appreciate all of the wisdom here but I swear I am still confused on the jargon. Either that or I simply don't like the answers I am finding so I am still looking for someone to tell me what I want to hear. :doh:

Recently purchased Acer t180 came with PCI Express (I only know this b/c I read it on the board). I need to add a few extra monitors so I bought a Matrox G450 MMS 128 4x video card splitter board G45X4QUAD-B Matrox Graphics - Financial and Insurance - G450x4 MMS .... Before I bought it I read that it is a PCI card compatible with all PCI and PCI-X slots.

Being a worrier, I have now convinced myself that the card will not work on this machine. I have followed and read all that I can find re: PCI PCIe & PCIx and I am still confused.

I know that for eon’s computers have, aside from the dedicated video slot, several other slots on the board. These are for things like a modem, game controller, USB extension board.... what have you. Are those basic boards considered PCI slots? If this board that I just bought will not/does not fit into the PCI Express slot, would it fit into one of these other slots?

I do not even know enough to ask a reasonable question and for that I apologize and appreciate any guidance or assistance that is available.

PCI slots are in almost all modern PCs. PCIe are not used in all PCs, personally i have an AGP slot not a PCIe slot

PCI-X is used to upgrade the grfx on some laptops (quite rare)

you should have free a PCI slot, if you don't you can add PCI slots by adding an external box containing 4 PCI slots that connects to the PCIe slot, here is one, however, they are not cheap

i think this is the only way to add a PCI card to a PCIe slot

well i must add matrox don't have support for all applications, especially gaming can be a disaster

it will work with your pc don't worry about that, anyway the system coming with pci-x support also come with pci support too so don't get afraid ;)
 
First off, dont get PCI-X confused with PCI-E. Your new computer will have a PCI-E (short for PCI Express).

In addition to the PCI-E slot you will have a couple pci slots that you can run your PCI video card as well as any other hardware that still makes use of the PCI slot (I.E. sound cards, aftermarket ethernet cards, ect..)

If you are going to be doing alot of gaming and are targeting new releases you will have to step up a purchase a PCI-E card as alot of new games are requiring as the minumum. You will have to check the system requirements in any and all games that you purchase to make sure your hardware is capable.

Hope this simplifies things a little for you.

:good: i made some massively wrong post while i was learning, glad you didn't take it personally - cos i hate arguments \ disagreements

BTW: do you know anything about building a boat, cos me and Karan have being trying to build 1, but nobody takes us seriously
