    Hey there HWF guru's,

I've recently bought a WD740 10.000 Raptor SATA HDD which I reinstalled my OS XP Home on. Now I wanted to use my old 2 PATA HDD as extra storage and backup for drivers and so on, and I thought I had it all worked out, that is until my computer started eiter rebooting itself or freezing completely. All HDD's did show under My Computer

In the MMC under system logfiles I find a lot of error regarding controllererror on Device\Harddisk1\D.

I'm not sure how to resolve this, I've left the jumpers as they were initially so that's one HDD set to Master and the other HDD to Slave, both are connected through the same IDE cable.

I'd like to know what I must do to make it work, additional info; my motherboard has a 3rd connector for another IDE cable.

For the moment I have disconnected the motherboard IDE cable with both PATA HDD's, which resolves lockups and crashes, but that's not the way the cookie crumbles is it?

    Help would be much appreciated.

I presume thad the D disk is one of your PATA disks?

maybe try and take out the D disk and see what happens.

other than that you could try and put those PATA disks on seperate IDE channels AND after that put them both on the one unused channel.

also, it would be cool to check them for bad sectors and format them.

    Thanks for the reply Edijs,

I've already taken out both HDD's, the problem is gone then.
Drive D is my Optical DVD though, both PATA drives were recognized as E and F.

I'll put both drives on seperate connectors to see what that does, should I set them both to slave then?

    Greetings,

    Marcus

im assuming the cd or dvd rom is alone in its own IDE channel? I didn't really understand your first post, so here's what I'll do, put both PATA hard drives on the same IDE connector and the DVD on its own and set the hard drives to master and slave.

hope its relevant to your post:doh:

Hey Roy92, thanks for the reply,

The problem arised when I had the cables set up as mentioned by you, the DVD has it's own IDE channel and the 2 PATA drives were on one and the same cable and channel, one set as master one as slave.

Strange thing is, the error is about my D drive, which is the DVD rom, but the error description is; Device\Harddisk1\D.

At first I thought it was the SATA drive, but after disconnecting both PATA HDD's the problem didn't show up. Do the jumpersettings on PATA influence the SATA HDD?

    Greetings,

    Marcus

Try putting the jumpers on all PATA drives on Cable Select.

I just tried that, to no avail though. It seems to have worsened the problem actually, more error entries than before :(

    Thanks though,

Any other solutions? There are jumpers on my DVD rom drive too, but I'll have to take it out completely to see what available options it has.

    Greetings,

    I think I've resolved the issue now;

I connected my DVD rom as master and the 1st PATA drive as slave on one IDE cable and insterted into the blue masterconnector. And the other HDD is set to master also but connected on the secondary IDE channel on the motherboard with a second IDE cable.

No more error entries in the log :D I guess this thread can be closed if nescessary, my problem is resolved.

    Thanks for the help guys,

    Greetings,

    Marcus
