Memory Upgrade On Mesh Pc

Guys, quick piece of advice required. I have an old Mesh pc (AMD 2800+) It has has 3 memory slots, labeled DDR1, DDR2 and DDR3. Slots DDR2 + DDR3 are blue and slot DDR1 is black. I have no idea why? I have 256mb x 2 PC2700 DDRMEM 333mhz in the 2 blue slots. My question is - "I want to upgrade the memory. Can I put a 512mb card in the the empty black slot, or do I have to use a 256mb card?, or can I only replace the 2x256mb cards with larger 512mb or 1gb cards. Not after spending a fortune, just want the old girl to run a bit faster. Once installed is it just a question of switching the machine off and then back on ?Many thanks for any answers.

 

What memory you can put in is dependant on your motherboard. What kind of motherboard have you got?

 

I have lost all the doco that came with the PC. (several years old) Which menu can I go to to tell me what motherboard I have. When I search online it says I should have a - Abit NF7-S motherboard. I think the memory has been set up in some dual DDR method, as I have also found this online -

More importantly, however, Mesh has once again pushed the CPU and motherboard chipset to its limits by using two 256MB PC2700 DIMMS to complement the processor's 166MHz (effectively 333MHz) front side bus and the nForce2's Dual DDR memory system.

Ok, if your board is in fact an Abit NF7-S, you do have the three slots. The reason why two are blue and one black is to try to help the user set it up correctly.
Memory
- Three 184-pin DIMM sockets
- Supports 3 DIMM DDR 200/266/333 (Max. 3GB)
- Supports 2 DIMM DDR 400 (Max. 2GB)

What this means is if your usin 400 mhz ram you can only place it in ddr 2&3 and have a max of 2 gigs. If your using 333 or lower you can place them in 1,2,&3 with up to 3 gigs. Here's the kicker, if you decide to only use two sticks of 333 or less you actually have to stick them in ddr 2 and 3. This mobo loads from 3 to 1, not 1 to 3.

 

Many thanks for your help. What I might do then is buy 1, 512mb 333mhz ram and stick it in slot 1, and leave the other 2 as they are. Hopefully going from 512mb of ram to 1gb in total, should make a difference for only a small outlay. Cheers again, Simon

 

I'd recommend putting that 512 stick in ddr 3 and putting the 256 from there into dd1.
