Hi, Suddenly a few days ago my CD drive started opening and closing by itself. The CD drive no longer works. It was scary initially and annoying now. I have Dell Dimension 2400, with dual boot - Win XP and FC5. I can say that this problem is not limited to Win XP, as the drive opens and closes even during the boot or when Fedora Core is running. I suspect that it happened after I used McAfee anti-virus to scan my computer. I checked the option which looks for 'prank' software that does system crap, like opening CD drives. Is there a way, I can troubleshoot this issue and recover my CD drive? If not, is there a way I can disable the CD drive using Boot Menu (BIOS) or by pulling out the power cable for the drive? Thanks for any help. - tg
What is the brand of your CD Drive? Is it samsung? I had the same problem on a samsung DVD drive and I know many more people whose samsung drives have become like this. I don't think there is any way to fix this problem. Even after sending the drive back to the manufacturer for fixing it, the problem came back after a month.
By opening and closing by itself means it is going bad, I would change it or unhook it as soon as possible... I had one doing the same thing, only I left it alone and with in that week it burned out my motherboard..
