I have installed Win 98 on my PC. But I wish replace it's hard disk with larger size one. But my problem is I haven't good Win 98 CD. So I like to copy "C:" drive fully (with system files), and paste it on my new Disk with another PC's(It have win XP OS) help. Do you think will I face any problem on my plan? Will it boot normally with pasted files?
I don't think you can do that... its not as easy as it sounds buddy :x: First of all: 1. Your going to be missing your registry hive. While in Windows you can easily back it up and then extract it later on to the new hard disk but i dont see how thats going to work out... 2. I might need another voice on this one, but i think your going to have a problem with your MBR (master boot record)
no, you need to transfer the system (MBR) to your new HDD, from a DOS prompt Code: sys (source) (destination) e.g. sys a: c: transfers the systems ability to boot from a floppy disc (a: ) to a HDD (c: ) or create an image of the HDD with something like Acronis TI or Acronis ME, although it's probably easier with ME
It won't work, because all the drivers on the other pc are Different...Are you going to dual boot, XP and 98 ??
If XP is installed on an NTFS file system (it is by default), you cannot run Windows 98 from the same partition. P.S. - Windows 98 no longer enjoys security patches from MS, so please don't let it on the internet. There are enough spam bots out there as it is.
Ghostman 1 you have miss understand my question. Because I'll fix new hard disk to same PC which contained old win 98. Only Hard disk will be changed for that PC. I will use another PC to move windows system files to new hard disk. scorps65, I think registry also saved on hard disk as a system file. So I will not lose it. But I can't sure it until try this plan. donkey42, Can I transfer system ability to boot to any drive on my computer?
You cannot copy/paste the OS from one place to another.. You might be able to use Norton Ghost image , I am not sure. You really just need a windows 98 setup disk...
You can use ghost fine to do what you ask, it doesnt matter what is installed on a disk/partition it copies EVERYTHING 1:1
Is include bootable ability also? Else I have created an program on visual basic, It can copy all files from disk. If it can't copy any system files, it'll give an bat file to copy those files from Dos.
