Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and hope you can help me. This is the situation. Its a Medion Tower PC with pre-installed Vista Home Prem. The goal is to place Windows XP on a 15GB partition with NTFS format. The partitition has been created with out any issues, the PC has a Terrabyte of harddrive space with two discs/500gb split. The problem: When booting from the XP and running through the wizard after pressing f8 to agree to the t+c's and the partitions should show, they dont, not even the core C drive dont show, it just slows the below; Unknown Disk (there is no disk in the drive) Unknown Disk (there is no disk in the drive) Unknown Disk (there is no disk in the drive) You cant select the above, if you move forward you just get the windows blue screen of death. I know now that the 3 unknown drives are representing 3 memory card slots on the front of the tower. The C drive is not "reporting" in the XP installation wizard. However if I use the Windows Vista OS recovery disc, the Partitions show without any issues so why dont they show when the XP OS disc is used? This is what I really need to know, as I've tried so many things in the BIOS and in disc management - Has anyone tried this and had the same problem? Cheers Jamie
You probably have a SATA controller that XP doesn't recognize. You'll need to make a driver floppy and load the drivers from it before XP can install to it.
Thanks for that, however I'm sure they are PATA'S not SATA'S. If you're right, to get the drivers do I? Try to find them on the VISTA CD and put them onto floppy or contact the PC'S manafact and ask them to supply or find out the make of the MOBO and get them from there? Thanks for your help
PATA, SATA, SCSI, what's important is that Windows has the drivers. If it doesn't, you won't be able to install to drives connected to the unsupported controller. I specified SATA since that's the most common scenario. Vista drivers normally won't work on XP and vise-versa. You need to get the XP/2000 driver from the manufacturer (whomever made the controller and/or chipset).
you can either slipsteam the SATA drivers into your XP CD or load the SATA drivers at the beginning of XP installation by pressing F6 when prompted by the installation process BTW: here is a guide to slipstreaming if it is a PATA drive, i'm at a loss, could you please DL & install Everest or PCWizard or some similar hardware recognition software & post here exactly what hardware you have
