Recently, i would say over the past week or so my computer has been acting strong, programs are terminating for no reason whatsoever, things freeze for a while and sometimes my computer takes 3 or 4 tries to boot. Can anyone here tell me if is something that would definatly tell me that the hard drive is failing?

firstly i would suspect a virus or spyware, what antivirus, spyware scanner & firewall are you currently using ?
and how often do you scan everything
Edit: personally i wouldn't suspect HDD failure unless the HDD sounds to be powering up then down or it is make some other ticking noise

NOD32 for virus stuff, nothing really for a firewall and nothing really for an adware scanner. Im the only one who uses the computer and know what to lookout for as far as adware and stuff goes. The reason i think it may be the hard drive is while windows xp is still starting up, when you get the logo and the little bar below it moving, it usually restarts then. Then IF I get it to boot which occasionally it does, it always says windows has recovered from a serious error. After everything is done starting up and i try to start firefox or more recently even try to transfer some of my files to my external hard drive it reboots itself.

well, using XP on net without a firewall is asking for trouble & the firewall included with XP is crap, adware / malware should be scanned for about every weekCannerT said:
anyway, the problems your haveing seem to point towards:
- virus
- underpowred PSU
advice: update AV, scan for adware with Ad-Aware & Spybot S & D, and post your PSU make & model & please don't say it's a generic (usually crap) PSU included with a system case
