Hi, welcome to HWF! I believe Vista will run, but not very well. On my Athlon 64 2.0GHz with 2GB of RAM it's painfully slow, I'd guess XP is 2-3 times faster. I've found the Celeron Socket 478's to be painfully slow, that along with 1gb of RAM would mean Vista would probably run quite slow. You'd be best sticking with Windows XP, or if you want some fancy 3D effects, try Linux. Linux can do a lot more with older hardware than Vista can!
NO, Not true, I am running almost the same as you are, 478 Motherboard 2.8 ghz overclocked at 3.15 , running 1 gig of ram and Running XP/Vista/longhorn/ and Win 2008 workstation...ALL of these run just fine , even Vista with NO Problems.. My system is Quite fast... I even have Vista running on 1.2 Ghz pc with only 768 ram, and it runs just fine.
i see, but my dad he has like something called a mega pc from msi, and it overheats ALOT. i tried to install vista and it overheated(even xp), and he has a P4 laptop and does the same thing. we tried changing the overheating-shutdown temperature and did the same.
Any Over heating does not come from the OS, Over heating is caused by poor ventilation or bad fans,I would open the case up and leave the side door off, then start the pc and check the processor fan and the rear case fan,If there is one.. Also make sure the inside of the case is dust FREE..
yes i know that it doesnt come from the OS. my dad had me install new fans and cpu fans in the computer. of course before that i dusted it completly. and it still over heats. as you said i should leave the sides off but i triede that before. i think im just going to tell my dad forget it, but its hard for him becuz hes an stress analist aerospace engineer, and he has tons and tons of files of planes and there stuff. he cant buy a new pc because he too buzy and doesnt trust me with a 1000$.
Aren't Vista and Longhorn the same O/S? I understand what you are saying, but a computer can overheat because of the OS, or other software. When I had Linux installed, aMSN had a bug which meant that the CPU load was 100% all the time! This caused the laptop to be about 75 degrees celcius most of the time. I would suggest that you check you have correctly attached the CPU fan, and that you applied thermal paste evenly across the top of the CPU (removing the old dried up paste before!).
No they are not the same , Especially the first betas, I have One of the first versions, build 3683 and it is way different.. LongHorn was based on XP not Vista... Well you said right there, A computer won't overheat because of the OS, BUT Because of Other/Add on Software... Like An Antivirus, say Norton that drains your system resources...then yes on the other software,,, So what happen when you leave the side panel off ? Also what is the make and brand of this computer ? can you get us a picture of the inside?
yea well my dad does run some memory takeing software because hes a stress engineer aerospace. thermal paste, i have no idea where i can get that i've heard of itbecuase im building a pc and i think i need to apply some before start the computer.

Just out of interest, how can you be sure that it's overheating? Could it be a faulty power supply, or the power supply which is overheating?
thomas234, he is right, I was just going to ask the same question, To check the power supply..A weak power supply or if it is going out Might cause it to run hot..
But what is your system? Unless it's exactly the same, or a lot better, you cannot know for certain. It could be when a more than a certain amount of power is demanded, the PSU just cuts out. I would suggest removing any unnecessary hardware from your dad's PC to test, such as sound cards, graphics card (if has also has onboard graphics), all CD drives but one, floppy drive, all hard drives but the one which will have windows installed. This will use less power, and should give us an idea whether the PSU is duff or not.
well actually he only has 1 harddrive, 1 cdrom and 1 floppy. theres nothign that he put in extra. well yea thats true my computer is a tower while is is like a cube. but my system probably demands more power cuz i hae alot of addons and stuff on it. my dads pc hasnt been touch ever since he put everything 2gether
