well folks! my little episode may go to prove (if proof is necessary) the importance of doing one's homework before going off half-cocked!
story is that i rec'd a Celeron D socket 775 chip through the post the other day. i bought it cheap to use as a test chip for any 775 boards that i might buy for building. next, i tested it with a P45 chipset board and it didn't work. went to the asus website (it was a p5q pro) and found that the Celeron D cpu is not supported. yup, should have done that first!:O
i have no reason to believe that the Celeron does not work by the way. i have no other board to test it on though.
first Q is; is it possible to kill the board by mounting an unsupported chip? i'd have thought not, but what is the experience of the forum?
secondly, i mounted a known good 540J that i had used initially to test this board recently....nope, didn't work. in between, i had removed the cmos battery to reset the board. since then, i have reseated/ swapped out the gfx card; memory and psu. nothing!
the board starts up, stops, restarts and the fans keep running indefinitely. removing the heatsink/fan quickly, i feel the ihs; it is warm.
turned the monitor off and on to get "no signal"....disappears on start up as it should but no screen.
any observations welcomed...have i lost the board?:(
    thanks in advance

what is the bios revision of the motherboard? when you checked the cpu support list did you make sure you don't need a different bios revision to support that cpu? i think celeron D's are 90nm ready. You say when you power on the machine the motherboard starts up stops and starts again alot of intel chipset motherboards do this when updating bios settings/frequencys/voltages etc. But can be a faulty bios chip if it continualy does it and won't post.

mounting a unsupport chip wouldn't cause any harm as long as it's the same socket e.g. LGA775, it will just cause the system bios not to post.

I doubt there will be an issue with the 775 celeron D processor.

do you have an onboard speaker on the motherboard? if so when you remove an essential component e.g. ram, graphics card, some cases cpu fan do you get any beep codes? if so generally a good sign the bios is operating correctly. If not it's a corrupt bios chip.

Asus are well known for dodgy motherboards should stay well clear. anyway hope this helps. good luck

hi bobby, thanx for your input. the p45 just doesn't support the celeron D at all; regardless of the bios rev. i am relieved about the non-supported chip not affecting the board. i am unfamiliar with the workings of the modern intel boards, so the behaviour of the start/restart is new to me.
i don't think that the board has a speaker, so i can't test by removing the memory etc. just looked at the board again; no buzzer!
this version of the board; PRO; doesn't have a dual bios either like the deluxe, so i'm stuck for the moment. have to wait 'til i get another 775 board and try the 540J. can't think of much else to do:(
