I have a 3+ year old computer; Intel E6700/winXP. Yesterday it began to act strange in that it stopped recognizing keystrokes. I determined that it was not the keyboard. I restarted it with some difficulty because momentarily, it would not power on. I finally got it started and they keyboard began working. While this is going on, there is not problem with the mouse or any other type of unusual behavior. Today the keyboard quit again and eventually it would not power up at all. I removed the power supply and it starts on the bench and has all the required outputs.

My assumption now is that I need to replace the mobo. I just thought I would check in here on the off chance that someone would recognize this problem.

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Try replacing the keyboard First, then try another power supply..

The first thing I did was try different keyboards. When that didn't work, I switched the keyboard input from ps2 to usb. That seemed to work, but then the same problem came back. The power supply would not turn on, but when it did, I could not get past the bios access and even when there, since I had no keyboard, I couldn't enter the bios. Now that I've taken the power supply out, it starts just fine and produces all the required voltages. With that in hand, I'm better on the mobo.

Called the mfg today and they said to try resetting the cmos, which I did, but no help. I also tried a new power on switch, but nothing. New mobo on the way, per the mfg recommendation.

Have you scanned for a virus ? it sort of sounds like a keylogger virus ...

I considered this momentarily when the problem begin, but once the powering up problem began I forgot about it. Is there any way for a virus to cause a computer to not even power on?

If it is a smart Virus, then yea! A smart Virus can literally take over your whole computer.. It all depends on which one you get. I got one awhile back that put my computer into a loop, It would just start up and shut down, It would do this all day if you let it..

I'm pretty sure that's not my problem, but when I find out, I'll let you know.

Received and installed new mobo yesterday. It was NOT the mobo. I then replaced the power supply which I happened to have because I bought it for another computer I was getting ready to put together. It started right up. Losing the keyboard really threw me off. I just couldn't relate that to a PS problem. At least I have an upgraded mobo;)
