Hey guys. ^^ Just looking for a quick bit of advice on replacing a faulty motherboard. I currently have a XFX 750i, unfortunately it seems to be dying and they apparently don't make these anymore. If anyone can point me towards a replacement that'd be compatible with the hardware I already have, that'd be amazing. I've got quad Q9400s, dual 9800GTs and 4 gigs (2x2 gig) of DDR2, 400mhz RAM. If you need any extra info, give me a shout. Thanks muchly! Silvestra.
Hi, The RAM is the really tricky part. Have found lots of boards that can support the other stuff, but most of them need at least 667mhz. I found one AS Rock motherboard on newegg that could support the ram but not SLI. If you would be willing to bump up the RAM to something like DDR2 800 you would have a lot more options. I found this motherboard which looks nice at tigerdirect (have ordered from them lots of times with no problems) ASUS P5N-D Motherboard - NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI, Socket 775, ATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0, Firewire, Serial ATA, RAID at TigerDirect.com
Would the existing RAM not work in that at all, or would it just be slower than it's capable of? Bit more than I wanted to spend, but if I dont have to change anything else it's doable.
Yeah. Unless you want to change RAM, the P5N-D seems to be about the only option for a new board. If you can find some i680-based board, that would be a potential, but yeah, unless you want to drop for at least new RAM, you're probably SoL. Your RAM would work fine at full speed, as I'm assuming it's PC2-3200, which is the slowest of DDR2 grade. Plus, the advantage is you're dealing with the same core logic chipset, so that would eliminate a lot of potential problems that can occur with motherboard swaps.
Thanks for all your help thus far, greatly appreciated. Slight update, I happened to offhand mention to someone I was having issues and they've offered to buy me some RAM for christmas. So now I have the cash to upgrade both, what options would I have with that potentially? Would be looking at around £160 total. Thanks again in advance.
I tried finding another board out there right now that supports sli but couldnt find one that was in stock. It sounds like from what Big B said that your current RAM should work ok in the board. I checked on newegg.com and found this ramhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122&cm_re=DDR2-_-20-231-122-_-Product which is 4 GB of DDR2 800 which looks decent. Has over 2000 5 egg reviews on newegg. If you combined that RAM with the board its about 160 dollars US which according to google is around 101 british pounds. But before you buy the RAM, you could try the new board with your current RAM to see if it will work first
