Ok, first off please excuse my few references to ebay (I know its banned from these forums) but its only to help to best convey my situation. I'm looking to build a dual xeon server to be used for testing and practicing for trying to get my MCSE. I found on ebay 2 matched cpu's as quoted:
"FOR SALE IS ONE PAIR OF INTEL PENTIUM 4 XEON CPUS-1700MHZ
1700/256/400 Stepping code is: SL56N" (my only reference to ebay).

I would like to combine it with ASUS' PC-DL Deluxe motherboard (http://usa.asus.com/products/server/srv-mb/pc-dl/overview.htm). In talking to a friend he said to make sure that the cpu's I'm getting are compatible with this ASUS motherboard. But when it comes to cpu/mobo combos i'm really not too sure of myself. I think i've been lucky to this point and haven't screwed up in putting them together and don't feel like having this be my first time. I know the motherboard takes 603-pin cpu's, which these are.

So finally to my request....can anyone tell me from the info i've given whether these will be compatible? or if I need more info what kind i need (most likely from the ebay seller). Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D

The asus motherboard you are looking at, as you have said is quite a new motherboard in the dual processor range, the only thing you will therefore need to look at is does it support the same cpu pin.. and yes it does.

They should work fine :good: (presuming that they are undamaged on arrival)

On a different subject, why do you need a Dual Xeon for your MCSE? just out of curiosity, as i am only 18 but have the oppurtunity to take the MCSE later next year if i want to, i know roughly what you will be learning, however would you care to fill me in ?

Also what IT experience/knowledge would you say you have? :good:

Yes, those will work fine. It's a very popular dually, and there's tons of threads about it over @ 2CPU Forums that will have more info about what you can use and not use. But it's an Asus board, so it should be pretty good anyway.

    Ok, thanks guys....

ProcalX as to your question, i don't need a dual xeon for my MCSE, but however on the server admin side of things i don't have much experience, nor have i ever had the chance to work with a true dual cpu system. For that reason i'd like to install a developer version (the 180-day trial version) of a win2k3 server edition on to the box to allow me to gain some experience with win2k3 and systems admin/engineering.

    Thanks again!

Yeah, need vs want is a big difference. I want a quad CPU setup...but, uh, there's the whole money thing. Dual processors aren't too bad, but going to 4 or more gets expensive really fast. Basically, experimenting is what you're going for. That's something I love to do too. Experience is always better than book learning.
