Is installing Windows Service Pack 2 advised?

I have a new custom PC, with Windows XP Pro, and Windows Service Pack 1 installed. The person that built, and sold me the PC, said NOT to install Windows Service Pack 2. What is the opinion of the Forum? Should I go ahead and install Windows Service Pack 2, or not.

The only reason I could think of for not installing it is if you had a pirated copy, but even then, I don't think SP2 would do anything.

I see no problems installing it. He was probably just misinformed.

Windows Service Pack 2 works absolutely fine, the only problem you might have is some of your programs not working.. however these programs have all been updated so that they work (usually for free).

And if you do install it, it's software and will not effect your warranty.

I would install service pack two because of the amount of security updates and wireless network features, the only trouble i've heard of besides the ones already listed is that the firewall sometimes drops internet connection if you have another firewall running so be sure to turn it off.

Be sure to turn it off anyway, as its a microsoft firewall, which means the firewall itself will probably be the most vunerable out of any software or ports open on your pc..

rofl...

true true...

and Welcome, Dave.

i had problems at first with Sp2 so i did a system restore but now i've installed it again it seems to be fine.

I have a 3 computer home network. A friend set it up for me. The friend moved away. HOW DO I TURN OFF THE FIREWALL?

you can go to control panle sercurty center then scroll down and click windows firewall then check turn off with no exceptions.

A Service Pack 2 upgrade will be fine and if you archive the old files then you'll be able to uninstall it incase anything goes wrong.

Hi 01bolandn! I went to Settings > Control Panel >, but could not find any Security Center icon! Was that the "Control Panel" you're talking about?

Once service pack 2 is installed its a little coloured sheild icon named 'Security center'

OK. I found the Security Center, and the Windows Firewall icons on my other PC. On the Windows Firewall options, there are:
__ON (Recommended) Which was checked.

__Don't allow exceptions.

__OFF (Not recommended)

I unchecked the ON, and checked the OFF.

The Security Center now shows FIREWALL.......OFF

Is this the way I should have it set?

Yep. [google]Agnitum Outpost[/google] or [google]Sygate firewall[/google] which are both free and very good.

Thank you Waffle, ProcalX, Dave35K, Matttibb, for your input on the installing of SP 2, and special thanks to 01bolandn and addis for the input on the Firewalll. I needed that! :p

The Windows built-in firewall is only half of what other firewalls are (or should be). Software firewalls can block both incoming and outgoing traffic and programs on the PC its installed on. Windows firewall only blocking things coming in. If you get something like a trojan horse that's sending stuff out, Windows doesn't stop it.

Thanks Big B, for your input. Question: Is the Firewall in my D-Link Router, good enough to block out any problematic incoming or outgoing traffic?

NP :good:

If I'm not mistaken then your router should act as a very good firewall, probably better than a software firewall. but you can always use a software one aswell to keep peace of mind.
