How do I make a data CD-R UNrecoverable?

I have a few CDs I need to dispose of. Problem is, I don't want the data contained to remain on them, or be recoverable at all, as they contain sensitive information. What's the best diy (do it yourself) method for this? I thought I vaguely remembered a section on cdrfaq.org about it, but can't find it now on that page, and all I get on web searches are programs and companies offering data recovery. There's always the "smash it with a big mallet" method, but I'd rather not get messy/dangerous (what with razor sharp remains), and I am positive I remember a FAQ/page of methods online... Anyone?

I'd just scratch the disk with a screwdriver or similar pointy object, trample it in mud, and then put it in a bag and whack it.

I'll have a looksy.
 
Have you looked into any of the cd shredders for sale?

They're probably the best solution for getting rid of cd's with sensitive material.

Hmm... Sounds interesting. I would be keen on rediscovering that site from my memory first, though, as it seemed to have a rundown on various approaches. Darn me for forgetting :)

If its really sensitive data that you can't afford to take the smallest chances with, then buy a shredder as syngod said.
One of the most complete (albeit most dangerous) ways to do this is by just putting some in an old microwave and setting it. I've seen it on Brainiacs and it looks quite...damaging.
 
I'd put it in bin then sprinkle some moldy curry etc on it :) No-one would be that desperate to get it :) hehe
