There is thermal tape already on the heat sink. What is a good way to clean it off the heat sink. After removing it I want to use artic silver 5 compound. Do I put the compound on both the cpu and the heat sink. Please reply

    Thanks

Put a thin layer over the CPU die.

Get a flat edge PLASTIC somthing.

I used my wife's facial hair (steady... do not even go there!), poroxide aplicator. :p
It has a sharp end much like a straight edge screwdriver.

Scrape as much of the compound as possible.
Then you can clean it further with propyl alcohol of some sort, VCR/Casette player head cleaning fluid is good (as long as it has no oils in it like finger nail cleaner), and use it to wipe any exess compound.

    Two things:
    1. I bought Akasa thermal compound remover - at least I know it is actualy made for this purpose.
    2. I, too, thought that changing from tape to grease will make a difference - it did not! My temps are identical. To be on the safe side, I used Ceramiq. That way I know that any spillages will not harm the circutry...

From my understanding tape tend to dry and perform worst after a while.
If I were you, unless you already removed the tape off the h/s, will only make the change if you can see rises in temps. Otherwise, for me anyway, it did not
    make one bit of difference.

    Keep it cool!!! :good:
