hi, I re-booted my comp last night due to a virus, and now i am having problems using IE.

On some pages it does not load them properly coming up with a display message saying "problems with this display page may prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly. In the future you can display this message by double clicking the warning icon displayed in the status bar"

it then says click hear to see details and when i click that it says:
    Line: 3841
    Char: 1
    Error: Libary not registered
    URL: (URL is here)

Can anyone tell me how to rectify this problem.

    Thanks in advance,

    Skribla

Sounds like you may have lost a DLL critical to the operation of IE in your virus episode. You might consider using Firefox instead of IE, since it is not dependant on the same DLLs as IE, and has much better security than IE.

ok, but when i rebooted my comp i thought it put all the original files on the comp from when it comes out of the factory? Is there anyway I can get the DLL file back as I would much rather use IE, and MSN messenger uses it too.

I have also noticed that when i start up MSN it asks me if i want to continue running scripts on the page- is this a symptom related to the problem.

    Regards,

    Skribla

well i may thing you are daft to use IE as FF is far more secure and has some easily installable plugin“s, but if you want to keep having problems with viruses and stuff - have you tried upgrading IE or redownloading and reinstalling IE

Yup a system restore will do a good job as Tony said. A Firefox brower as per everybody saying will be your good bet because if you look in the news, flaws in IE comes out very often but its rare in Firefox and you can also all more plugins for more functions.
About DLL file, just insert your windows CD in your computer and do repair. It will fix that file automatically and if you have a virus then install AVAST antivirus home edition, which is free and scan for the viruses.

It won't be easy fixing this problem because we don't know what DLL file is missing / currupt.

I wouldn't recommend using the repair function on the Windows CD because that will cause even more problems.

If I were you, i'd install Internet Explorer 7 beta 3 (actually i'd install Opera, but there we go ;) ).

The repair function on windows is there for a reason, what kind of problems would it cause?

The problem in question relates to Internet Explorer only. The repair function on the Windows installation CD changes system wide variables. When the repair function is run, it will not only repair Internet Explorer, but the rest of the Operating System as well. Since there is no problem with the Operating System, the repair function will needlessly change (and revert to default) other system settings. This could cause other programs to non-fuction because the repair changes entries in the Windows registry. So skribla could end up with more work on his hands. He might need to reinstall other programs, restore his personal settings and in some cases, replace hardware drivers.

The same goes for System Restore. Regardless of whether it fixes the problem or not, it will also change other system variables that do not need changing.
I have System Restore disabled by default, and i'd only ever use the repair function as a last resort

First off make sure you've got rid of the virus...completely. I usually run AvastPE in safe mode. Also while I'm at it I usually run spybot & ad-aware to get rid of spyware, now reboot into normal windows. If you want to continue using IE (which I don't advise) then go ahead and download/install Internet Explorer 7 beta. If you want to be a bit more secure while you browse I'd consider taking a look at Opera or FireFox.

As for using system restore vs the repair option on the XP cd, I always choose the repair option. I have no faith in XP's ability to rollback the system to a previous state. I've seen it fail before.

I think just using the repair option from the CD would be the easiest way to fix your problems AFTER you've got rid of the virus.

Skribla seemed quite happy with ie, before whatever corrupted it,surely system restore or repair function and a few reinstallations to get him back to how he was is the right way to go.As for firefox or opera (not slating it) but hes probably more familiar with ie whether its 6 or 7b.
