Ok guys need some advice still getting my wife and my pc together any way I have been putting my list together and my money. I was going to get an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice with the 939 socket and a Chaintech VNF4/ULTRA mother board and a Albatron PC6600 128MB DDR PCI ExpressX16 Videocard in it. Then I was on newegg looking at CPUs and saw that the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (754) was in a combo with a Biostar NF325-A7 mother board and you get the board for free. So if I go with 3500+ and the Chaintech Board I'll have $303.87 in them or if I go with the 3700+ combo I'll have $263.45 in them. So witch would be the better deal. If I go with the 3700+ that would give me 40 bucks more to go on a better vidio card. By the way I'll be going with 1 gig of value mem. and a 80 gig W/D hard drive. Im not real worried about up grading later on because if this goes well I plan on building me a rig this winter/spring with a FX-55 or 64X2 cpu and my wife mainly justs web surfs and plays like card games but for now I would like to play some of the new games that are out. We just got DOOM3 and I really like it but on this Dell 8200 I have to play it on lowest settings and its still real jerky. Please help thanks guys. Rick

I would go for the 3500+ venice, even if you dont wanna upgrade later on the option is still there as socket 754 wont be around for too much longer and is a budget socket!
And if you would like to get a better video card either save that little bit extra or get a 3200+ instead, its still a great CPU and you can overclock it if you wish!

Definately go with the 3500 Venice. Not only is the 3700 s754 which is already outdated, I haven't heard mny good things about biostar motherboards. If you go with the former option then you'll get a good CPU which is overclockable and a good Chaintech mobo.

Think this should play most of the new games out at lest on med. settings also is the PSU ok its got 18A on both 12V rails and I have heard Antec makes good PSUs. Oh by the way I was wondering some thing when I got this dell pc they sent me a WinXP CD can I use it on the new pc. We have a home network here using a router so I think think the IP address would be the same for both PCs. Thanks again Rick

You could install it again on your new PC, but you wouldn't be able to activate the copy since it should already have been activated with your Dell, and so the copy would expire after 30 days. You should get a cheap OEM copy of XP home which should do you.

You will be able to play most games on Medium for sure!
The PSU is very good, its unlikely that you'll be able to use the XP cd as dell customises their cd's for each computer they make!
Akso may i suggest a HDD from Western Digital or Seagate!

No if they detect the same key on 2 computers then both of them get shut down and you have to reformat both. I strongly recommend against that.

Well I was wondering about that because about a month after we got the dell I had to reformat it because of IE problems and the tech from dell told me to just hit register later button and I did that was years ago and I have reformated once since then and did the same thing and it works fine. I get all the updates and such. One of the main reasons I dont want to buy the XP home right now is I would like to get the 64Edition but I want to wait till they get some of the bug-a-boos worked out of it and I'm cheap :x: By the way do you think I could tell a diffence between the 3500+ and a 3200+ cpu if both were stock not oced.

There's little speed difference between the two, you may notice a few fps drop between the two but it's not biggy. If you're going to get a really beefy computer for yourself later just save money and get the 3200, if you're wife is mostly interested in card games and web surfing she wouldn't need more than an old Celeron 2Ghz tops. But I realize you wan't to use it too and give her something of good value.

Well I ordered it to day I went with the 3500+ and I changed a couple other items. I went a bit cheaper on the vid.card went with a powercolor X300SE HyperMem. Hope I can play Doom3 with this card but we will get a better card later.Went with the W/D hard drive. And went with a better case I got a Thermatake SVIKING with 2 120mm fans and I also got a ZalmanCNPS7000b CPU cooler because I think I may try a little over clocking. I would like to thank you all for all the help. Does any one know of a good o/c site newbe here lerning as I go. Thanks again Rick :good:

The 3500 is a good choice as it overclocks very well and at stock performs almost identically to the 3700 SanD:good:
The X300SE is not a Doom 3 card, it will play but you'll have to turn things down quite a bit, I would imagine setting it to medium @ 800x600 no AA/AF should give you pretty good fps though.

Ok I stoped the order because I want this to be able to play games too. I figered out that if I could go with a Thermaltake Soprano case with the 430W psu that comes with it, I would have enough $$ to go with the 3500+ and get a 6600GT card. Do you all think this psu would be ok? The rest of the system would be as I listed above but with stock heat sink. By some of the reviews on newegg folks on there are saying they are having good luck with this psu I just dont want to burn the cpu or mother board up trying to save 50 bucks. That would suck real bad.

Really, hmmm, the cpu they throw in with it is actually a pretty good Thermaltake silent purepower I think. Seems like it sound be fine to me but I'd trust the reviews if they're saying it sucks. Look at some Antec cases, the psu's they provide are very good quality though the case designs aren't super attractive always in my opinion.
Oh and look into the X800GT, very nice card for the money, easily faster than the 6600GT:good:
