Alright, here are the parts i have for assembly. 1. Compaq motherboard with intel 810e chipset (p/n 010697-101) 1. celeron 1.2ghz cpu with 100mhz fsb 2. 128mb of DIMM ram 1. Coolmax tonado cpu heatsink/fan built in combo. 1. 64mb pci graphics card (no agp slot for my mobo) 1. 10gig hard drive 1. cd-rom drive 1. floppy drive 1. zip drive and a very old and beat up dell dimension xps d333 (previously with a 333mhz pentium 2, but ripped out the board so i had somewhere to put the new one...) i'm going to be canibalizing my current deskpro EN 550mhz pentium 3 for it's RAM...i can't use the case for my "new" board because of it's utterly retarded case design, so i have to use my old dell case. So i have everything i need... i have a 200watt power supply...will 200 watts run new my board? also i kinda have a half ass idea where to plug in all the components but i'm not 100% sure, i've looked all over the net for a diagram but couldn't find one. So any advice for me on that? And last but not least my cpu cooler...i'm 99.9% sure it will be more than sufficient, but not positive, what do you guys think? Actual last question...there are capacitors blocking my heatsink/fan from attaching to the heatsink, cpu latch thing this is because the fan is not a normal design it's round cold forged with a fan in the center, the only solution i can see is filing down the edges where there is blockage...but i would really like to find a more intelligent solution then this...so again, i ask your advice. Any replies will be greatly apretiated... as well as any criticism or "you shoulda just bought a P4 board and you would still have some upgrade options" (yes i realize this, i bought the celeron before the cpu, also a slocket adapter which never got shipped to me and wouldn't support the cpu i had anyways so i went for the s370...i'll be building a P4 system soon...this s370 thing is just practice really)
Yes 200Watts will be plenty to run your system (some of the most powerful systems today dont need more than 240W (providing the Voltage Rails are to a good standard) The Coolmax Tornado supports Intel Socket 370 processors up to 1.13 GHz so no your cooler a.k.a HSF (HeatSink & Fan) is not enough. With regards to the problem with your capacitors or mosfets blocking your HSF (cooler), do NOT file down the edges that are in the way, you will require a better HeatSink & Fan anyway, but never file down any part of an HSF, it can severely effect heat disipitation (makes it alot hotter). By creating ridges or gaps for air to sit between the CPU / HSF this creates huge amounts of heat because of air bubbles so dont do it. As for your board here's a diagram: sorry but i dont have any grphx proggies loaded as of yet so paint was best i could do:
ProcalX: Thank you a million for the diagram and the advice...so my coolmax won't be enough...that sucks...what if i were to use it in combination with another fan? Could that suffice or will i just have to buy another heatsink? And about filing down the heatsink, i was just a lil frustrated i don't think i would have ever actually done it. know anyone that would like to buy a brand new coolmax tornado?...lol also any suggestions for a good heatsink? (about to hit up ebay to look) thanks for the info you've been very helpful.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6804319752&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1 - this is the link to my cpu cooler...it says it can handle 1.3ghz celeron cpu's...thats why i bought it...can anyone confirm?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835118102 that's a very good, very quiet heatsink/fan for your system. that tornado isn't very good. Even if it can be used on 1.3ghz CPU's, it's not that great. I'd get that heatsink if you can put a little more money into the machine. Better safe than sorry I suppose
I went with this thing - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6805572701&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1 - is it crap or did i make a good choice?...my bank account is starting to feel pain for all of my impulsive ignorant ebay hardware choices...i really hope this isn't a repeat. It's all part of the learning process i suppose.
not the best, but you could try it out and give it a shot. Ratings for processors don't really mean squat but it's a general idea, I've had a 2600+ on a 3200+ and higher heatsink and the thing was overheating.
Hi Shock I have to ask this question because I am intrigued and please, please do not take it the wrong way. You have posted a number of posts regarding this system. Are you doing this as an experiment or are you actually building it for a purpose (apart from honing your system building skills…) It is just that it seems like you are going through a lot of trouble for a very low spec system. Obviously, everyone here, including me, is always interested in helping or sharing knowledge. I am just really curious…..
I am most certainly building it for a purpose, my previous system was 333mhz aside from my "new" system which is 550mhz...My main focus is to learn as much as humanly possible about this system, and PC's in general (as i am aspiring to go to school for PC building) it's upgradability, it's shortcomings, it's downfalls...(etc) i'm just using this as a model for future endeavors. My main goal is to go to school and learn everything i can about computers, and also learn from the people of this forum. I just want to see the past of PC's, what it held, what the present is holding, and what the future holds, listen to expert feedback and fine tune that into a model for building excellent computers on all ends of every spectrum. I've already learned alot from this forum and it's members, and for that i thank you all, when i make enough money to go to school i will not forget you, and the things you taught me, without prejudice to my ignorance, paying no attention to my modest skills. You still advised me, and taught me. I can only hope one day that i will aquire the knowlege that you have, and assist others in the ways you have assisted me. All in all, i desire to learn, to learn enough to be an asset to people such as myself, I desire nothing more than to teach, and to learn, to help others understand this passion. What we discuss here is the future, albiet this forum will be an archive to the past in 10 years, a historical discussion. If this forum lasts as long as i hope it does it could very well be a vital center of knowlege...and certainly understanding, for every single individual on the earth that aspires to make something from nothing, for every person that has the know how but not the funding. I know that i have the ability to make my ideas a reality, whatever can be conceived is possible. Through understanding, creative thinking, and general intelligence the ideas can be made into reality...thinking outside what they say is possible, looking at what others have to say about my thoughts, knowing that alone is why i attempt to make "old" systems new again...
