Alright, i just thought this might me fun to try, rules are as follows. completely new build: motherboard, cpu, RAM, cdrom, HD must all be compact enough to fit in a standard xbox case...if you had unlimited resources (this thread is hypothetical of course, unless someone actually wants to build something based on their own ideas What set of components would you install? How would you install them? Also post any ideas that you might have about using a regular TV instead of a monitor. I dunno whats gonna happen in this thread but i hope to see some big ideas floating around! And last thought...if everyone agrees on a setup each member could buy a component and send it to a PC expert on this forum (to be agreed on by the majority) and possibly even build this thing. I think that there is enough collective knowledge in the members of this forum to give even microsofts new xbox 360 a run for it's money! you have any thoughts post em!
Problem with building a PC based games system is that performance won't be great for the money. Dedicated consoles can produce good performance with lower hardware specs because of major optimisations and games specially developed for the platform. For a mod though, I'd put it into an SFF case, with a display at the front.
Yeah your right about the price consideration...i mean the xbox 360 that is coming out will be cheap enough for us to afford because microsoft has acess to all the parts needed at factory direct pricing, the average joe would have to spend a hell of alot more. but the idea is coming up with a concept that could be good enough to be picked up by a major company. Building the machine, copyrighting it, and then showing a demo to a reputable company...if picked up the unit could be mass produced at acceptable prices with much more capability and user friendliness due to the fact that it was built by the consumer for the consumer.
also given the fact that all the major game designers are working on projects for microsoft, sony (etc) i think even if we came up with something ingenious it would be crushed by the larger corporations...it seems these days that the ability to advertise as oposed to actually having a solid system is the most important thing in the gaming world. but like i said in the original post, i'd just like to see what everyone here can come up with.
because thats what MS did with the xbox...same thing, PC moded to game. All i'm talking about is space limitations...nothing else.
CE? concole edition, its not exatly windows looking, i wouldent call it, propor windows, i know a better challenge, try cramming a pc into the ps2 or 3
I'd be more interested in something more origional than sticking higend components into an XBOX. Like an actual case mod, say an aqurium PC, a fully wireless computer built into a chair (monitor would be a little tricky but you could get the power cable to snake down unobtrusivly), a pc built into a desk so the screen flips up out of the surface, a refridgerator PC, an entire computer in a keyboard, etc. There are a ton of possibilities but what's do able is the question.
why not, make a giant xbox case, or somthing wierd like that i would like to try to intergrate my old ocmputer into a desk, but i dont have the knowlege to do so.
yeah i was thinking about that, i have an old computer sitting next to me and might try and do somethying weird with that...hmmm
MATT555 maybe if you do somthing wierd with it, as you go along, take pictures of it, and write about it, for a HOW-TO guide
