Hi, I just built a pc intel 650, foxconn 955X7AA-8EKRS2, and a sapphire ati x800gto gpu. now i can't get past post. when the computer loads the screen is all garbeled. characters fill the screen mostly p's and t's and the screen blinks alot there is some readable text but it is mixxed in with the garbeled screen. making the bois almost impossible to navigate and immossiple to get anware in the pc, i haven't yet loaded an os. anyone have any ideas? do i probablyy have a bad gpu[it brand new]?
IT does sound like your graphics card is damaged if your computer is still operating. You might want to try another card if you have one available. If it is damaged, then RMA it back to ATi or return it to the place you bought it to get a replacement.
Ok so I just noticed [since I couldn't hear it before, too much ambient noise] there is a single beep which of course means there’s a DRAMS refresh failure. So its now a question of whether memory could cause that garble, I have two dimms of 1 gig Mushkin memory, which I have never used before so it could be that, but I don’t believe it would cause the screen problem.... so does this point to my mobo??
As always, I have no idea what I'm talking about. When you are in 320x200 mode (which computers start in), to put letters or text on the screen, you put their ascii value into the video card's memory. So if you are getting lots of garbled letters, that means there are values in there for some reason. Since you said one beep means DRAM refresh something, maybe you're video ram isn't refreshing. Just my thought process, mainly to help me I suppose.
Ok so I tried one stick at a time and the error still remains. I have taken everything out reseated them, still no joy. So it's not the memory and it certainly isn't something put in loosely. I haven't yet flashed the bios or reset the cmos chip, probably will do that next. But I’m running low on ideas…..
After you clear your CMOS, then you should probably consider putting your graphics card at fault. Try and return it to where you bought it.
Ok so I just checked and reset the cmos but still no change I get a beep and then a garbeled screen..... ahhhh!!!
Ya I'm starting to think it could only be the video card... Apparently your mobo can give one beep over a gpu, this i did not know. Knowing this it seems like it has to be the gpu... unless anyone has anyother trouble shooting they would like to share...
Have you tried a known working PCI video card? It sounds like the video card's RAM is having some problems, but it'd be a bad thing if your video card wasn't the problem.
