I was thinking about getting an AMD Athlon 3000+(754 socket) and wanted some opinions before i got it.
Well, the Athlon 64 3000+ will fast already be very overclockable. The AMD 64 processors are very good and, as long as you aren't a heavy gamer, the 3000+ should be fine. The skt 754, however, may not be the best idea. It is generally a good idea to get the newest socket. If you already have a 754 motherboard that is fine but if you are getting a new motherboard I would recommend 939 in the interest of planning ahead.
It's a good chip, it's what I'm running right now. I have had 0 problems, all my temps are stable and where they should be. Also a good CPU for gaming, but obviously not the most high end. If you plan on doing some gaming, I'd get something a bit more beefy.
I would not recommend getting a S754 athlon 64. Not only do S754 chips lack dual channel support, but they use older cores as its an older socket and so won't have the great optimizations of the newer cores like Venice or even the slightly older Winchester. Socket 939 is my advice.
It's not too bad, and for a budget setup, it's not too bad. Just understand the limitations you'll have with a S754 system, mainly lack of dual-channel support and only being able to upgrade to an A64 3400+ tops. I haven't compared my S939 and S754 3000+ side by side, so I can't give you a performance comparison, but the S754 isn't a piece of crap...just older and less upgradeable.
